Any recommendations for a good quality low entry car jack?

No recommendations for SGS ste, I'm replacing an SGS low entry jack that wouldn't lower smoothly for most of it's life, then eventually it packed it when the oil burst out of it!

The Arcan jack from Costco used to get recommended but they no longer sell it?

Sealey 2500LE - Sub £170 on Amazon at the moment - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001SFXDM8

About as cheap as it gets for a properly solid steel low entry jack with quick lift and an actual spares supply chain for it.

Definitely NOT the lightest thing out there but for workshop use that doesn't really matter and has things like proper bearings on the swivelling rear wheels.

Yeah I'd echo the Sealey suggestion (also available from Halfords for the same price).

If a jack is going to fail it is quite often on something fairly trivial, but if there's no aftersales support/spares then you can be left having to buy a whole new one for the sake of a washer or spring etc. The suppliers of rebranded Chinese offerings (which includes SGS - it is their boot/bonnet struts that are made in the UK, not their jacks despite how their misleading branding might otherwise suggest) tend to rarely come with spares support and instead just deal on whole-boxed products. I'm sure Sealey get their jacks made in China, but they also get a full set of spare parts shipped over too if they do.

Found this on Costco website:

They had this, or one like it in store last week. (Farnborough)

For less than this (£160) you can get a 3-tonne low-profile jack from Halfords. My wife got me one for my birthday and I'm really pleased with it. It has a quick-lift foot pedal that a couple of other linked ones in this thread don't, and resin wheels that are much quieter than metal over hard floors.

The Sealey ones are quick lift, they just don't need an extra pedal to do it biggrin

+1 for the sealey jack. I bought a 2001LEHV which is slightly lower than the 2500le mentioned by others but still has a good lift height.

For me it means I can get straight under a low evo/civic and get the car up in the air and back down on to 2 railway sleeper blocks (8ish inches) so I can do oil changes easily!

Sealey above. I have a Facom 2T jack, also a good one, very low entry at 75mm and good lift height.

Available through OnBuy for £170 inc the VAT & delivery (it'll come from PrimeTools). https://www.onbuy.com/gb/p/facom-dl2lp-2-tonne-low...

I've got one of these. I think its pretty decent, and as they say Sealey will sell you spares.

My only grip is the white handle you twist to lower, it seems to bind where it mounts in at the bottom, so twisting the handle to lower the jack isn't smooth.
I've greased it, but maybe it needs a bit more smoothing off (white paint on the handle might be binding in the hole?) or I'm doing something wrong.

I just bought the 2T Halfords Aluminium one and it won’t lift.

It’ll go up, a bit down, up, a bit down, unloaded, to the top.

But under load it just gets towards end of stroke, then makes a funny noise and just drops back, then goes back down on reverse stroke.

It’s unlike any jack I’ve had before, not sure what’s up.

Could a brand new jack really be low on oil?

How can they even test/QC it if that’s the case?

Anyone bought a brand new jack that’s low on oil?

I bought a Clarke 1.25t jack 6 years ago and it’s been flawless. Although they are 50 quid more expensive now.

For what its worth, I have a Sealy 2Te jack and have now had it for 35 years. Still works perfectly.

I have the 3-tonne SGS low profile jack and it's heavy, solid and lowers smoothly. Not that fast at lifting though but that's not an issue for me. No complaints at all.

That looks pretty much the same core parts as my Halfords 2T aluminium one, mine just has thick ally sides and stuff.

I think the release might feel a bit off if the UJ is binding up a bit?
What’s it like with the UJ straight?

Mine lives in semi retirement with my daughter who's cars are relatively light, it was over £100 when bought back in the 80's, i replaced with a Weber because regularly lifting a Prado isn't light work and needs higher physical lifting capacity than the usual suspects offer.

Might need bleeding, instructions will tell you how to do it. Usually it's run it to full height and keep pumping the handle for 25 strokes. All off the top of my head, worth checking the manual for your paricular jack.

Regarding Sealey, they used to be good years ago, their modern stuff is dire. Also, on any of these aluminium racing jacks check the various nuts regularly. They losen off over time as the aluminium flexes over time.

I had an SGS jack fail on me. Wouldn’t go near their stuff again.

I did the bleed process as described. No joy.

Did it again and again. Checked it was tightened up on release (how tight is too tight?), took it right to the stop but it still wouldn’t lift.

I’ve used a wide range of jacks over the years, but never been immediately stumped or put off by a jack.

I’m taking it back on Thursday, not even going to bother checking the oil level as I have no oil to top it up with, or appropriate pipette to remove oil.

Pretty depressing that it’s not worked. Surely they’d check them?

If they don’t it doesn’t fill me with confidence.

£200 reduced to £160, then an extra 10pc off, so £144.

Cheap for a reason?
