Key Battery Trouble
Discussion
Bought a second hand car last year, came with two keys, one original one cloned. The clone key had a flat battery so I bought some Panasonic ones and replaced it, about three months later when I came to use it the battery was dead, I replaced it and once again a few months later it was dead. I guess it must be a faulty key, but what could be wrong with it? I am curious.
What’s a cloned key - like a Chinese copy?
Could just be iffy batteries - which battery number is it? Keyless VAG cars are very sensitive to battery type, read of people buying packs of batteries and only some work as the key takes more than the batteries rated current if a button is pressed.
After one was dealer changed at service it lasted a month.
Having said that, there a good chance the cloned key has more iffy components than a genuine one.

You need to test the signal emitted, obviously there should be none when no button is being depressed. Testers are available for circa £30 eg Sealey, or ask your local garage if they have one to test it for you.
A 'cloned key' refers to the software, it's a key that has been electronically cloned from an existing key rather than from the master key, it's nothing to do with the hardware of the key itself.
Edited for clarity.
