bought a leggy ish (80k miles) diesel, smoky and a big chuggy on startup. No warning lights or messages yet.
I reckon to at least rule DPF out, I should get a DPF clean done.
I can see some national providers of this type of service, and lots of local ones too. I can also see Halfords now do it, for what would look like a lot cheaper price than other providers.
Is there a stand out service that people have used or is it a case of just find whatever one is cheapest.
Also some of them go on about 'carbon cleaning' which i think implies getting rid of crud from other parts of the engine etc which may have resulted from a clogged DPF. I think I recall seeing somewhere previously that this is snake oil? Or is it.
thanks

i used these guys when my BMW 330d dpf got clogged and threw a error code.

£250 for a guy to come out, clean the dpf, no more light. that was about 20ks ago. certainly cheaper than buying a new dpf.
you could also run some diesel injector cleaner through the fuel tank, that might do something.
though, if a car is already smoky at 80k, might be worth it actually still has the dpf on at all - my bmw never smoked and thats now on 150k.

If it is only chuggy on start-up, glow-plugs rather than DPF?
i just swapped them myself. It has helped but i can still see smoke and a bit juddery until a few revs on startup. I just figured DPF was the next logical step that has a common effect and something to rule out on diesels of this sort of age.
Another thought - could you have an injector that is slowly leaking fuel into a cylinder, so when you start that cylinder is running mega rich until it burns that fuel off, all done in the first rev? - Or, conversely, it is leaking back to the tank, meaning not enough pressure in the fuel rail? - more likely to be the former. How you would test this I do not know, can you monitor fuel rail pressure from the OBD port? - if it goes down, where is the fuel going..
