Boxer van not starting

Upon checking, I have RAC homestart cover......
Called them this morning and as the van is sat on my drive there was a four hour wait, no problem, I'm not going anywhere.
Very pleasant young man turned up at about the three hour point, showed him what was happening and he got the engine running...roughly... by keeping the key in the 'start' position. This through up the EML, his code reader diagnosed 'closed EGR valve', applied his breaker bar to EGR valve and his hammer to breaker bar, engine then started and ran properly and code cleared and did not reappear. Suggested replacing EGR valve or having it mapped out, but he did not say that!
As always, it's knowing which bit to hit is what you pay for....
