Is this axle seated correctly?
Discussion
have just replaced the driver side front axle on a 2009 Mitsubishi colt 1.3. I think I have pushed the new axle in as far as it goes and the circlip seems to have engaged. But I thought the silver piece shown by the arrow is supposed to push further in so that there is no gap? At the moment I can almost get the tip of my finger in the gap. There is another photo below from the passenger side and there does not seem to be a gap on that one. Despite this, I have driven the car and it seems to drive okay and does not seem to be loosing fluid. What do people think?

Not being pedantic, but using the correct terminology in your title will attract the correct advice.
So that's a 'driveshaft' you've replaced, not an 'axle. It looks like you've bought a new or remanufactured shaft?
That 'silver part' is merely a protector ring for the oil seal in the gearbox, it shouldn't touch and rub on the oil seal, but should ride a small distance from it. It looks to me that it's just about within an acceptable distance away, within the tolerances that they worked to when it was built/rebuilt, yes it could be closer like the ogher side's one, but then some cars' shafts don't have these rings at all.
If the shaft is secure in the gearbox, ie it won't come out when you tug it with hand pressure, then I wouldn't be losing sleep over it.

Thanks for your opinion. Yes its a new shaft but not a genuine part. But I did compare it to the old and it looked the same to the eye.So that's a 'driveshaft' you've replaced, not an 'axle. It looks like you've bought a new or remanufactured shaft?
