When did Exhausts get so expensive?

I remember when there were exhaust centres everywhere and you could pop in and get a full stainless system for a couple of hundred.

Ok so that was a few years back but wow what a change.

Just been quoted for the back section of a citroen Berlingo Exhaust, that witha small silencer box but no Cat or DPF or anything silly.

£550 trade!!!

A whole system is around £2K with all the emissions crap.

I've gone at it with an angle grinder and a joining sleeve for £16. Still shocked.

2017 Blue HDi from Stellantis, tried all the usual GSF/Euro etc and no good.

I ended up ordereing a joiner from Stellantis as I knew it would be correct size and then backed up with one from Euro which is pretty much identical. Stellantis £77 with 10% off, Euro £16!

There are many what appears to be centre sections without silencers for £80 to £120 made by BM Catalysts on the bay of E, and Klarius silencer at around £80.

I was quoted £420 by Kwik Fit for an exhaust for my daughters 1.2 Fiesta, the Cat is on the manifold so this was solely the straight pipe and rear box.

I took it to my indy in the end, who got me the same thing for £150 fitted.

You should try motorcycle exhausts... I had a cracked header on my Triumph 1050 - about £830 just for the part!! It’s a fairly common problem on them, too.

Unsurprisingly, I had someone weld it up, so hopefully I’ll get a few more years out of it. You can get a Chinese special for much less, but that has no catalyst (or balance pipes) and would probably require a fuel map adjustment to suit the lower back pressure.

If it goes again I’ll be looking on eBay in the first instance.

I can’t remember the last time I had an exhaust part replaced. My E36 lasted 19 years with no exhaust part changed. Same as on an old Volvo (10 years) , current Fabia (11 years). How do exhausts fail nowadays?

Think my Viva HA exhaust cost less than a tenner back in 1981

You can still get a complete exhaust for a series Land Rover for about £100. Including fitting kit.

I suppose it must be well over 10 years ago now but I had a custom stainless exhaust made for my Trophy for about £400ish!

I have an E36 that's four months shy of 25 years old. Still on the original exhaust. One of the rear trailing arm pockets has been eaten by rust though so it's going nowhere for the foreseeable future!

Yes, body rust finished mine off. I could have patched it up, but it was time for a change.

For me it was the window sliders and regulators. And the headlining coming off.

And the Cat had failed and needed a new 'MOT spec' after market cat every two years!

The nylon window sliders do go brittle and either break and the mechanism drops, or jam and you can’t open the windows (the latter is preferable!). Easy and cheap enough DIY job.

The rubber guides failed, couldnt get spares, and the passenger window dropping to the floor at 11pm when parking it up in the middle of Manchester to complete the drive carsharing with a mate was around the final straw for its time as my daily driver.

Bet it was wasnt stainless, and that it no longer exists, however!

But how old was the original ? Back then exhausts didn’t seem to last very long .

Back then though, they weren’t stainless, and also fuel had lots of sulphur in it which turned to sulphuric acid and rotted it out from within.
