Oil Change Frequency For Astra
Discussion
Hi all,
Don't have a service manual with my car, but appreciate some advice.
I have an Astra Estate 1.7 Td , 2012 plate. I do between 14-16 k per year in it, had the car 6 months. It was last serviced then. Due to the mileage is it worth changing the oil every 6 months, so that's every 7/8k miles ? I plan on keeping for as long as I can.
Or is an annual service probably ok for this?. I do keep an eye on the oil level is a black colour.
Is the general rule for an oil change every 12k miles or 12 months, whatever is sooner?

Ok thanks, putting aside the quality of oil though, if I am doing between 14-16 k miles per year, it's best to do twice a year though?
If its 15k of motorway miles at a constant rpm then 1 change a year will be fine.If your tootling round town doing short stop start driving you could do 2 changes.
Or just change every 12k miles as recommended and not based on the time its taken you to do the mileage if you are doing 12k in less than a year.

is this the right manual? If so 1yr or 20000m whichever first. So do it annually with good oil and filters and you should be fine.

Only if you like spending money. Any modern car will easily do 12 months on 14-16k miles. 5,000 mile/6 monthly oil changes went out with the dinosaurs. Many modern manufacturers are on 2 years/20,000 miles. Despite what you read on PH the manufacturers aren't kidding. So if you know someone who changes their engine oil every 6 months, just ask them how often they change their gearbox oil, differential oil, power steering fluid and brake fluid.
2 x 1.7cdti did just fine on 20k oil change intervals all the way up to 180k each
One thing worth doing at 100k is gearbox oil change, lol sealed for life, drop oil by removing gearbox bottom cover, replaced through reverse light switch hole on mine

Every 10k or every time MOT is up (seems a good gauge), yes it can go to 20k, and as it's a belt engine rather than a chain, yes.
But, think of that turbo that needs nice oil to work efficiently for longer too, if its a keeper I would be sticking to this regime personally.
1.7 is a good engine by all accounts and as been mentioned don't neglect the gearbox oil.
