Hi,
My 2010 Smart MHD has developed a fault with the ECO mode better known as the Stop/Start function.
It used to work and I usually deactivated it on start up.
Now when running the engine management light, EM stays on and the ECO mode don't work.
Remainder of car functions are OK.

Resetting the ECU to extinguish the EM is easy but because something is bust it returns next time it registers a fault.

Done most of the easy checking like switch cleaning and Starternator wiring defects.

Not too bothered about the fault but would like to find out where the fault might lie.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks.

I think the eco mode thing is disabled because you have a fault elsewhere which is causing the EM light to illuminate.
It doesn’t take much out of normal operating parameters for the stop/start functions to be disabled.

The first thing I would do is read the fault codes . If the EM light is illuminated then there is almost certainly a code or two flagged up in the ECU.

Most common one is generally with the start battery not being charged well enough.

MAP sensor fault found.
It's now with Smart Technic, they have found who ever replaced the engine back in Nov 2012 trapped the wiring to the MAP sensor and has rubbed away the insulation, Not easy to get at, hense let them do it.

I tried all the various methods of disabling the ECO stop/start which engages by default at start on the 451 MHD to no avail because the wiring fault registered in the ECU and caused the engine management lamp to stay illuminated after the engine was running.

I had also been advised by my friendly lady MOT tester it would have been a Fail at Testing time, so it had to be fixed.

Fingers crossed
