Probably a silly question, but I want to change my oil and, for the first time ever, i don’t have a flat driveway. I’m planning on putting one wheel up on the kerb to get underneath, and I’ll be round the corner from my house as I live on a busy road.

Is this technically allowed? And if so, anyone got any tips for making this as easy as possible?

I believe it isn't illegal although if done regularly for business it is different, but unenforceable.

Personally, I wouldn't consider it as what if the car is hit from behind etc when you are under it.

You say you don't have a level drive, but how "not level" is it, I would likely feel safer under a chocked car on stands/ramps than on a road.

It’s fairly level at the top. The gradient is progressive, and it falls away in two directions. It’s not very steep but it is sloped.

I’d be using ramps rather than stands and it’d probably be fine, but I’ve always been very cautious about getting underneath cars. The spot on the road I’ve selected is on a quiet cul de sac in a lay-by set back a car’s width from the road itself, so chances of getting punted are minimal.

Don't forget to bring a bucket.

Nah, I was just going to park up over a drain. (Joking, of course).

My drive is sloped so I built some ramps so when the car is up them it is level, but i have never had an issue jacking up on a slope. I do chook the other end, only lift one end and make sure that is down hill end.

It's not too steep a slope though.

Don't drop the sump plug... & Obviously the filter goes in the green bin.

Any spillage, even inadvertently, could get you into bother, but otherwise crack on. I pump out oil these days, easier to keep everything clean. Pumping might leave a little more old oil in the sump but meh.
