Seriously.

Due to a family funeral I had to rush up and down to the Isle of Harris up past Loch Lomond through Glencoe via Skye on Sunday & Monday.

Its single carriageway A roads the whole way & there's little opportunity to overtake at many points.

Travelling at night each time I came behind a truck they put on their rig of main-beam floodlights & indicated left when on a straight, showing me the way to a safe overtake. A contrast to the car-driving cretins that drive at 35-40mph through the bends then speed up on the straights when you want to safely get past.

Thanks. You guys made a long journey quicker & safer.

How dare you come on here complimenting us lorry drivers smile
I did a new delivery last night, place called Merton out in the lanes, sort of Thetford way. The last 12 miles is all single carriageway, so whenever possible I'll try and ease the passage of cars wanting to get by.

I often indicate left when I can see far enough ahead to know there's a safe overtaking opportunity for the car behind.

Sadly, around 80% of drivers don't seem to recognise this invitation.

I will still take the responsibility of an overtake. Will simply use the indication from another motorist as an aid, not an instruction.

Always say thanks though.
Likewise, I'll always try help out a lorry driver by a flash of the lights when it's safe for them to pull back in (oo er), etc.

I'd appreciate the extra lights but at the end of the day I wont overtake unless I can see it's safe.

Not me, they all got a couple of flashes of my hazard lights as a thanks, I usually got another quick flash of their main beam (floodlights!) as an ackowledgement!

Me too! If I'm just ahead of the cab of the overtaken vehicle, I'll try and let the overtaker knoe he's on safe ground. Why not? If it helps get him back inside I don't have to go outside, and I can simply get past hin to the inside lane without hogging the middle.

If there's a long straight, I'll normally move over more to the left and give the left hand indicator a few seconds. Anyone behind can then look for themselves before passing.

As I approach a bend I'll move back to the centre of my lane and carry on, on my way.

I did the same when LGV driving - put n/s indicator on for 3 flashes to encourage those behind to take a look and see if they agree that it is safe to overtake - it is not telling them to overtake
