Escape lanes

Drove passed a number of these on various hills around the country but never seen one used or even signs of it being used. Has anybody here ever had to use one?

I can imagine it being rather terrifying.

With modern brakes they're pretty obsolete but i guess there's always a chance of failure.

The ones on the A2 Jubilee Way down to Dover Docks /Ferry Port has saved a few over the years .
