I didn't realise how st the metal is on modern vans until I started fitting a set of metal plates on my nissan nv300 . It was literally like drilling through cheese. For the money that a new van costs manufacturers should be embarrassed

I've seen quite a few vans in scrappys like this to think that it's not just folk trying to get a part from inside the van, but a result of a theft attempt/successful theft.

Guess the owner decided to scrap it rather than get it repaired.

These guys look like they did a great job.

We've had a couple of vans broken into at work where the thieves have peeled back corner of the sliding side door like it was the foil lid on a yougurt pot.

My works been rife with it, all transits, drill a tiny hole in the door and it slides open, no alarm on a 45k van!

We’ve also had a few stolen, gypsys come along, smash the window, snap the steering lock and tow it away. Happened over the weekend to a enginner who had his brand new van delivered the Friday and it was gone by Monday

They sell the tools at carvoots but with the amount of theft going on I’m shocked that anyone’s who’s in the market for tools even thinks about going to a car boot?

Literally had my side door drilled as I went for a pre op check over at St. James in Leeds last week. Was gone 30mins but they only need a minute to drill the side door. Thankfully they were pretty good and only left a small hole (compared to some I've seen) and got an old makita radio and sds.
It has got the repair plate on but seeing how that's been cut around, doesn't make you feel any safer.
You wouldn't want to even go for a coffee in Leeds if your tools are in the van.

My son’s white Peugeot Expert was broken into in London, they drilled a couple of holes in the back door, no tools in it just surfboards which they didn’t fancy, we put a repair plate on it and I’ve told him to plaster it in surf stickers so it doesn’t get mistaken for a tradesman van again.

I had my Peugeot Boxer broken in to a couple of months ago. We have deadlocks on the door so they peeled the roof back

Did you get the roof repaired?

I have recently installed a van vault, they additional weight is not welcome but it’s a necessary solution.
It’s been fixed to the floor and it gives additional piece of mind.

No the insurance co wrote it off. They’d broken the front bumper to get to the alarm sounder and smashed the steering column to drive it away. I have them on camera, it took less than a minute to take it. The police recovered it the next day with the roof peeled back.

Wow, if they are all made this badly then that's really going to hit insurance premiums going forward

It’s thin steel sheet, what did you expect? You think older vans weren’t as easy to drill a hole in?

I work for a large maintenance company and we have so many vans done over of all makes VW crafter was the easiest one apparently according to the guys ring doorbell they drilled a hole and was in within 6 seconds. We have had a couple of newer transits (2021) stolen and found burnt out one was used for other robberies throughout the night according to the tracker and police. You can do all the security you want but they will get around it eventually lowest of the low stealing a man's tools he relies on.

Vans have always been easy to break in to, now they do a bit more damage as the locks themselves are getting better.
Transits and sprinters used to automatically open up large enough holes after a couple of winters where you could reach in and grab a tool, just watch out for tetanus.
The real reason it is more rife is the police are a spent force and scrotes are more brazen than ever.
I would love it if the police were told to go out and end the crimes that really affect working people and if they have to shatter a few jaws and draw a bit of blood doing so well boo hoo shouldn't have been a fking lowlife then. Unfortunately that is a bit challenging in this day and age so lets go for some soft targets and easy wins.

I can leave the cargo area unlocked but the cab locked on my new Courier.
I’d rather they nicked stuff than did all that damage.

Mind, I’m only a decorator so all they’ll find in the back is a 4 pack of Stella, some well used brushes, and if I’m on a posh job a bit of sand paper.

Joking aside, I have £1ks worth of dustless sanding gear, but it never stays on my van at night.

It's impossible to stop these thefts, the more locks and metal shields you install the more damage they do, mine was broken into in a car park on a Saturday morning, about 2k worth of tools, luckily they just drilled a small hole.

I now have 2 van safes bolted down and decent insurance.
