Hi,
I'm in the process of obtaining my Class 1 license and am struggling to understand CPC requirements (i.e. do I need a CPC) so could do with some help from more learned folks.
I plan to be driving a race transporter (C+E) to racetracks on Thursday night/Friday morning, working/messing about at the track until Sunday afternoon, then driving the transporter back to base on a Sunday evening. There may also be some single day events (i.e. drive to the track in the morning and back again in the evening). That's basically it, other than some minor shunting around the yard to load up etc.
I think I'm clear on the driving hours part of it, but I can't work out if a CPC is needed for this type of use as guidance seems a bit contradictory.
The operation is definitely commercial in nature, and I am director of the company. The truck will be carrying a mix of cars owned by the company and cars owned by customers, plus tools and equipment owned by the company. Driving will be less than 30% of my job for sure, and everything in the truck is for use at the destination and will be returning with the truck back to base (other than consumables etc).
If anyone is able to provide some clarity it would be much appreciated!

I’m a HGV driver and I’m not 100% sure myself. If your being paid by the customers to move their cars then you’ll need CPC and tacho etc. I’m not sure if it’s moving your own stuff about, do horsebox users need cpc’s?

It’s not just me then!
There seems to be a bit of crossover that is making me unsure. The customers obviously pay for the service, but the transport to and from the workshop is a relatively small part of that service.
The way I read it, you can transposed your own equipment round to use at worksites without CPC, but that might not apply where equipment t is owned by others.
It would also be less than 30% of the job, which is think is another exemption…
I suppose the best thing to do is seek clarification from DVSA/DVLA, but I can’t see that happening anytime soon!
I suppose if you could claim the cars on board are just yours and your ‘mates’ and they don’t pay for transportation then it wouldn’t be classed as hire or reward?
