Hi all,

Just trying to get my German registeed campervan onto UK plates. I've jumped through every single hoop, bar the last one, which is now to apply for the V5c.

I'm trying to fathom the tax rate which applies for the VW Transporter T6 based Westfalia KeplerOne. Its list price was over 40k, so does that automatically mean it falls into the huge VED rate of 145 per annum, plus the first five years at an additional 320 quid?

Or is it a private light goods vehicle and taxed at 265 per annum? Its MGVW is 2800kgs.

The whole thing has been a pain in the backside, but this is the least transparent bit of the whole lot.

The N code I think decides if van or car, as opposed to the camper bit, however the not sure if the 40k bit applies to van's?

It’s not massively clear in any of the paperwork I have. But then my mind jumped to the VED I pay on my “proper” motorhome which is classed as Private Heavy Goods Vehicle (6t) so I applied the same logic and put the camper down as Private Light Goods Vehicle and submitted the form together with the requisite £55 registration fee and £265 VED for the year.

Fingers crossed I’ve got it right and I can finally get my V5c!

Would the tax class have an impact on speed limits ?

Was surprised when I taxed the 25 foot Winnebago for the first time and it was only £165. It is 1995 though but weighs nearly 6,000kg and has a 7.4 litre V8 so was expecting much higher.

Doesn't it have to go through IVA (albeit limited because of type approval - but again it may have been modded in Germany?)

Nope, I’ve got a Certificate of Mutual Recognition from the Vehicle Standards Agency based upon my modifications to make it RHD compliant (new headlights, taillights, speedo) and the original Certificate of Conformity.
