Have you ever slept in a car in winter?
Take a good sleeping bag. plenty of blankets, plus a thermos flask...
Once as we’d bailed on camping in Feb…..Take a good sleeping bag. plenty of blankets, plus a thermos flask...

Fully clothed with coat on and a good (ish) sleeping bag
Tried to sleep on the velour passenger seat fully reclined.
It was bitterly cold - started the engine once or twice an hour.
Never again with that setup.
It was on private land too (field) so did have something stronger in the hip flask too to try to take the shivers away.

6k budget, is this possible. I was looking at the Honda CRV?
Doesn't the CRV fail on at least 2 of those counts. Not proper 4x4 and not big enough to sleep in. I could nearly sleep in a LWB Frontera, but not quite long enough, and that was diagonal.
What about a 4x4 van
There are loads of options at that budget (I've been car camping for years). I'm assuming you want proper off road capability so that narrow things a little. Proper 4x4 estate cars like like the Subaru Legacy Outback and Volvo V70 Cross Country will have longer load bays for sleeping but you sacrifice head height which may be an issue, I've never had an issue with estate cars but I'm quite short. If you want more of an SUV then look at the Hyunda Terracan, Mitsubishi Shogun/Sport, Jeep Commander, Kia Sorrento, Nissan Pathfinder/Patrol or a Toyota Landcruiser to name but a few. I used to camp in my Honda CR-V, it was great but not the best off roader, very reliable and comfy though
Discovery TD-5
With the rear seats removed ( and the 2 jump seats on the sides if it’s an ES model ) they have a really good sized rear floor area.
They also have the hight that you need.
Slept in my one several times in Feb last year whilst on a work trip / road trip to the Sth of France.
There is a company that make a set of window insulators for them @ circa £200, but unfortunately I didn’t have time to get a set of these for my trip.
I plan on fitting an internal heater as the ice on the inside of the windows @ 6 am wasn’t pleasant !
Manual gear box version is best.
Just check the rear end of the chassis out for rot.

Volvo XC70 fits the bill. Get a D5 engined post 2012 in SE Lux trim and it’s a great car.
Came to post the same. A6 Allroad an option too.
It's the length that matters
