Tom Sharpe

Tom Sharpe is definately one of my favourite authors - indeed pretty much my favourite books are The Throwback (1978), and Blott on the Landscape (1975).

However when I mention him to other booky folk, there is often scoffing and criticism that it is either a bit too silly or vulgar.
Being a young gentleman that's probably why I like it so much. But are they right, is his work a bit too outdated and that sort of slapstick smut is no longer a good read? (instead straightup filth like 50 shades of grey is the order of the day)

opinions? any fans?

Depends on the book. Some of his are very good, some are fecking atrocious. Porterhouse Blue is a good example of the latter.

Riotous Assembly on the other hand, is excellent. A seff efrican friend of mine agreed, and pointed out that there are qquite a few jokes that non-afrikaans speakers wouldn't get.

I read all of his books sometime ago. Genuine spluttering LOL moments

Blott on the landscape was probAbly my least favourite. PH Blue my favourite.

The Throwback, Wilt and Riotous Assembly were good.

Didn't like PHB and the other Wilts.

My dad has a lot of these but I've never got round to reading many. Riotous Assembly is good and I remember reading out a section of wilt in either 4th or 5th year Engligh Literature that gave me legendary status for a while. ("A REAL vagina, sir?")

I am a fan of Tom Sharpe as well, Porterhouse Blue, all the ones with Blott in and The Throwback are a laugh out loud fun read!!

Well it's pretty obvious that I am a fan but whilst there are some books I like a lot, like The Throwback, I don't like the Wilt books and I don't like the South African themed books.
