Hello - I'm in need of a wee bit of help identifying an author in order to buy one or two of their books for my wife to try.

I heard a bit about this author on the radio recently (can't even remember what channel I'm afraid) and thought the books might interest my wife and would hence make an ideal sock filler for Christmas.

I'm afraid I can't even tell you the person's gender but hopefully the following clues will mean something to somebody.

As I recall, they wrote fantasy type stories but couldn't get published.

In a bid to get recognised, they tried crime fiction under a different name (maybe).

I think there are already two books with another out soon.

There is a central policeman character. The stories are set in Edinburgh.

Although primarily crime fiction, there is also a ghosty scary slant too.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric smile

You are sure its scottish?..I am thinking of the irish Booker prize winning author, John Banville, who also publishes crime fiction set in the fifties under the name Benjamin Black?

James Oswald?

The Inspector McLean Mysteries, he's also done a fantasy series that's due to be published shortly.

I've read Book of Souls. If you like Rankin you'll like this.
