Military hardware book - for an 8-yr-old!

I have an eight year old "atheist-god-son", whom I'm xmas present hunting for.
When he visited me in the summer he and his brothers were transfixed by all my old books on tanks, planes, guns, etc.
I want to get him a big book full of pictures of one of the above, preferably of WW2 era stuff.

Can anyone recommend anything? He's a very bright eight year old so it doesn't have to be a kid's book, but picture rather than text heavy.
Amazon is pretty useless for this kind of thing as there's just too much to look for.

Is there a "The Works" near you? http://www.theworks.co.uk/ They always sell these kinds of books and at good present type price.
