I found out this morning and was filled with sadness. I particularly looked forward to his SF books and eagerly awaited each new one.

Yep. I love the Culture books, and the idea that the Algebraist could have been a trilogy.

Poor chap. Lovely bloke, great author, petrolhead.

The Beeb are carrying the story on their front page - the poor man has terminal cancer.

Every year I look forward to the latest Iain M Banks novel. What a shame.

Very, vey sad.

Coincidentally, I just finished reading Stonemouth last night and was looking forward to his next book being published later this year.

terribly sad for him of course, but sad for us that we'll not get any more Culture novels

I can recommend his non-fiction 'Raw Spirit' book for petrolheads and whisky lovers

Terrible news one of my favourite author! Use of weapons is one of my favourite books he wrote, the Culture series is just so good. Loved his normal fiction also, top has to be The wasp factory!

I am really sad about this - I love the culture series and I think he probably has many more books left in him.
