I'm looking for a legal thriller for my 23 year old barrister son - he doesn't read a lot of fiction so I want it to be a good one.

John Grisham seems to be the main writer so either can someone recommend his best , or an alternative writer perhaps?

I love the Roy Grace series by Peter James.

I've only read a few John Grishams but they're very good (imo).

My favourite is "The Client" (out of those I've read), but none have been a disappointment.

Connelly is much more gritty.

Have just finished Michael Connelly's The Gods of Guilt - not a bad read indeed!

is there such a thing as an English John Grisham?, as much as I like his books, I also like reading books set in the UK

In what way? One of the things I like about Grisham is that the crime is almost incidental to the story and the sense of menace is generally implied rather than explicit.

Grisham's books are 'legal' (or legal setting based, at least) thrillers rather than 'crime thrillers' (which I don't mind, but Grisham's are a bit different because of this).

I've read a lot of Stuart MacBride recently and very much enjoyed them, but they're crime (police) rather than legal thrillers. Off the top of my head I can't think of a British-based 'version' of the Grisham-style stuff though I will think some more. I did enjoy the TV series of 'Judge John Deed' but that's not really the same thing, either.

Mark Gimenez might be worth a read.

Rumpole of the Bailey. Full set will keep him amused for days.

Seconded; worth a ton of Grisham's grindingly dull cure for insomnia.

I prefer Richard North Patterson to Grisham, but like Grisham

Agree with Rumpole of the Bailey
