I am an unashamed reader of graphic novels, depending on the artwork and story. At 60 I've not yet 'grown out of' looking at books with pictures, albeit I also read an awful lot of 'proper' books too. As stated earlier for me the artwork has to match the storyline since I do find it difficult to enjoy one without the other.

What do I like?

- Asterix the Gaul. Artwork is rather basic but the stories are simple and fun with some lovely puns

- Tales of the Trigan Empire. Again, like Asterix, the artwork is rather simplistic but the storylines are pushed along at a decent pace

- The Mercenary by Vincent Segrelles. Probably my favourite and I was collecting them, sadly a number of years ago they somehow disappeared frown but the artwork was (IMO) just lovely with some fantastic artwork

I do find a lot of the European graphic novels both great to look at and to read For some reason I find that a lot (most?) American comics (the superhero genre in particular) do not engage me in the same way.

Are there any other comic book readers out there on PH and if so where do your tastes run to?

I really like the works by Moebius. Darkhorse do a really nice hardback version of Edena and an accompanying art book. The stories themselves are a bit out there - but they are so nice to look at.

I also like his collaberations with Jodorowsky especially the Incal series - again the story telling is wild but the artwork and design is beautiful.

Ive also got a the Akira graphic novel set which is really good, plus all the Cerebus telephone directories which were recommended here but ive not started yet.
