Fiction for an 7-8 year old

My son is turning into a bit of a book worm and his reading is good for his age. Can anyone recommend some good fiction in the adventure, fantasy, sci-fi sort of genres that are good for younger readers? AI suggest he Percey Jackson books, but anything else would be good. He started on The Hobbit, but he found it hard going, so isn't quite ready for that yet.

My son fell in love with reading at 8-9 through the 'Podkin One-Ear' series. After that he moved onto the 'Skandar' series which he also loves.

Thanks all, id seen the Pratchett ones, but despite having read a lot of Discworld myself I never realised he'd written childrens books. Will check them out.

He has had a go at Harry Potter, first one he enjoyed, but then something scary in the story put him off the 2nd one and he wont carry on. Also, whilst he can read them they are little old for him and so a chunk of it goes over his head.

Will check out How to Train Your Dragon too.

Im trying to recreate the feeling foe him that I had when I read a Biggles book at about his age. Being engrossed in an adventure in a fictional world was just amazing, I can remember it like it was yesterday.

When I was around that age I loved the Brian Jacques Redwall series of books.
They’re a fantasy series set in woodland with only animals as characters and no humans!

My daughter is about to turn 8 and is obsessed with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, she goes through them pretty quickly, so just borrow them from the library rather than buying.

(Maybe a tad young).

A really good book... told from the animals perception.
Adventure: Not too scary... but thought provoking.
Remember it fondly from my childhood.

Some of the sci-fi that I read as a primary school child were the Starstormers series by Nicholas Fisk and the Scott Saunders books by Patrick Moore.
