OK,

A good friend visited us this morning and she had the following request :-

Find me a fun sports car, 2 seats, covertible, fast & fun £10k

She's early 30's single got a new work car, had an SLK and sportsbike before and now wants something to thrash around in at the weekends for fun.

I've suggested :- Lotus Elan, TVR S3, Caterham, Westfield etc but she's not too keen on the Caterham style roof. She's got here eye on a VX220 at the moment.

Any suggestions?

You'll really struggle even for an early high-miler Griff for £10k - £12k is the minimum for a 4.0 IMHO

And VX220 is still arouns £14k-£15k I beleive.

Should get a good Elan S2 (94-95) for £10k bought wisely.

Japanesse Mechanics = Reliable
Fibre Glass Body = Rust Free
Achiles Heel of the earlier SE Elans is sorted (Rear wishbones which are galvanised on the S2)
If she is used to an SLK will probably appreciate the quite modern feel of the Elan

If 10K is the budget I defy anyone to find a more reliable, fun and fine handling little sportster than an MX5.

Another 5K widens the options considerably.

But 10K will not buy you much "exotic" that isn't in the "total TLC by owner mechanic" stage of its life...

12K buys an older Mk1 Elise...

Perchance a TVR wedge? There are a few lady owners, even on PH... mind you, it helps to have a hairy chest.

hi, I am a married bloke with a 30 stone wife and 27 children. I also enjoy windsurfing at the weekend and need to transport all my equipment with me. My wife suffers arthritis and cant get in and out of low cars. I am looking to spend around 3 grand....

I have exatly the same dilemma at the moment.

Shortlist was:

- Chim. £10k one would be ropey, and big running costs/bills (shame, as this was the car I wanted the most)

- TVR V8S; still in the running, but slightly primitive driving experience.

- Porsche 944S2 convertible. The current front runner. Fast, reliable, relatively cheap to run, fabulous handling, and £10k buys you a minter with nice toys. Downside - it's a four cylinder.

MX5 !

And the hairdresser jibes are well out of order. I cannot think of a car which is easier to slide around with with on wet roundabouts. Absolutely great fun.

Colin Chapman would approve of the MX5. A proper sports car with proper handling at a cheap price.
