It's my nephews christening shortly and I thinking I want to get him a nice watch which will still be fashionable in 20 years when he gets the chance to wear it.

Personally I go for very plain, no chronographs, quartz watches (at the minute I'm wearing a £20 Argos special) but want to get him something better which he can keep while maintaining a similar style.

I'm reckoning on an absolute maximum of £100 but I'd like to spend significantly less than that if possible (£50 or so).

Any ideas?

Right, watches out then, I'd realised that when I looked at the prices for watches between posting and replying now :yikeS:

I'd not thought of Port My family aren't great drinkers but thats a good idea!

Get a Vintner to advise of something that will be superb in 18/21 years and tell him its to be opened then and only then.

About the range you are talking would find something that will mature into a stunning bottle of Port.

Theres one on Eton High St thats quite good and theres one in Parsons Green thats alright but neither are much help to you I imagine. Every town has one I am sure there are some up near you.

I used to do a lot of needlework and my standard christening present was a cross stitch with the name, date of birth and birth weight. Probably better suited to a girl than a boy but was well received.

half-case of port certainly the tradition in our family, although it's somewhat dependent on the year of the birth being declared a vintage (not all of them are). You can order them in advance, but the port from this year won't be bottled for a few years yet (2009?), so it'll be a wait. A red that's going to age for 18/21 years has got to be a very good one, (although will appreciate in value by 200-300% if it's a good one to start with - Google for some auction sales of Mouton-Rothschild/Lafitte Rothschild from the mid-80s) and to justify the expense will have to be stored properly. Otherwise come his 18th he'll be opening a very pricey bottle of balsamic...

there used to be an excellent vintner in Ripon (not very NE, I know, but closer...) Almost certainly still there.
