I am an emotional rollercoaster.

I have been a little tired of my elise of late - as it is my only car I am starting to yearn for a few creature comforts, and I fancy growing up a bit and getting something with a bigger engine (all my cars have been four pots in various states of tune).

Fair enough you may say, but saturday draws near and saturday is the day when I'll be meeting my potential new wife - a BMW ZM Coupe. I know the styling divides people (and causes some aggression as I recall from a previous thread) but I think it looks the dogs danglies and I like its rarity.

There's no questioning that I would be happy with the BM - it's just that I might be unhappy without my Elise. I parked her up earlier, looked back and fell in love again. But this was after a drive when I was cursing having to clamber into the seat.

Pros and cons of the BM:

Pros:
I like it
It's a great drivers car
It's comfy and fairly practical
It's well built and reliable
I'll be able to go away for weekends without using my gf's lap as a luggage compartment

Cons
It doesn't handle like the Elise
It isn't convertible
I'll miss her
My PH name will be redundant so I will have to become Breadvan or suchlike

Help me please! I need words of encouragement, or a hug at least.

No need to come over all unnecessary, young man!

Unfortunately under the circumstances, the only way a hug could be justified is if you were the spitting image of Johnny Depp.

Whoops, I meant to throw this question to the lions in General Gassing.

Can someone lob it over?

I can give you words of encouragement about the breadvan, as an owner (all be it soon to change to a MINI Cooper S Works).

1. You'll be getting LOADS more torque. Have fun accelerating from 40 to 110 in fourth.
2. It sounds great (when the zorsts are warmed up)
3. It's a more comfortable.
4. Great stereo.
5. It's veery, veeeery quick.

Now before you all jump to the defence of the 'Liz, I love them, having had the opportunity to try Sworks' '79 special edition. Fantastic car, just very different.

As for getting over your current love, not sure you ever get over it. I haven't, I still have photo's of all my old cars

This is encouraging, but at the same time confusing. I know the S Works is great, but surely it's no match for the M Coupe.

The handling wont be quite the same as the Elise, but you'll soon fall in love with the MC.

Dont get me wrong - the MC's handling is great. Its just half a tonne more car than the Elise.

Pull yourself together - and get used to all the looks and compliments you'll get due to the rarity. And boy does she have some turn of speed.

Good luck

I'm sure you'll miss the Lotus like crazy, I did when I moved away and it wasn't long before I was bkac behind the wheel of an Elise. Nowt wrong the the M Coupe though - at least you're moving to a fun car that provokes a reaction.

No match in a straight line, but looks like it'll be as much fun around the twisties. It also allows me to have a proper bo' snowboarding holiday in Canada this season......

I've driven Raify's Breadvan and as you know have a 'liz. Both cars are superb in their own right, comparing the two is a bit like comparing apples and oranges though.

One is a GT, one is an out and out sportscar.

Breadvan gives you TVR/Porsche performance with BMW reliability and (relatively) affordable servicing etc. If it goes wrong though, you will get hosed... but that's the same with all performance cars, so moving on...
Breadvan has more creature comforts (air con, a demister that works, a stereo you can hear), is somewhat practical (golf clubs are a doddle) and is a great cross country mile-muncher (apart from the puny fueltank which has you stopping pretty regularly). It will kill most Elises in a straight line and will make you laugh like a baby when you floor it.

Where you'll miss the Elise will be when you try and hack it around on some B-roads. It's bigger, heavier and less "revvy" and "pointy". You can't chuck it about like a 'liz and mark my words, if you think the back end breaks away fast in an Elise you'll sh!t a brick if it happens to you in a Breadvan on a public road and you're not ready for it.

That's my 2penneth... whatever you decide, you'll still have a great car!

P.S. Whether or not the ZMC is a "drivers" car depends on what your definition is... after the Elise, it's not really what I'd consider a "drivers" car to be. It's more of a compromise.

And your note on clambering in and out - I find th ZMC a b_gger sometimes, it's equally low and you still end up hauling yourself about (albeit not quite like shoving a giraffe through a letterbox in an Elise )

Do it. You should experience all types of sports car!

Only then can you decide what you really like.

I currently drive a std Z3 roadster and have the painful decision of what next... currently on the list..

Z3M (roadster) S54 model
Lotus Elise S2 190
TVR Tamora

Need to make a decision in the next month.. very painful decision, currently more so for everyone around me . Here are my thoughts for what they are worth..

Z3M - excellent car, perfect balance of power and comfort, but had something a little similar (same badge at least) for the last few years.

S2 190 - as previously said excellent on B-roads, but would I miss the creature comforts on the BM, would I care !!

Tamora - will match the 190 on 0-60 and the 40-100 on the MZ3, has the comfort of the BM and handling of the 190.. but how often would it be back in Blackpool getting fixed (more of a rumour than fact I think)

A too simple outline of a really tough decision...and I think I would like to buy them all -

It's good hearing from you all, and you have helped a bit. I'm dreadful at changing cars as I can only justify owning one and I want everything. I also develop a bit of an emotional bond with my cars.

However I have had my Elsie for two years, winter's coming and I wouldn't mind having my first grown-up car.

Having said that, I'm far from grown up and I do love my Lotus. I gave her the washing of her life last night and she looks wonderful today.

But just look at the ar$e on the BM:

Sod it, I think I'll buy it. But I'll always have a picture of Zoe by my bed.

Hmm, perhaps I'm borderline car saddo. Oh well.

Ah fer fecks sake man just buy it!

Both Elise and ZMC have a big ol' ass for you to spank silly so I'm sure you'll be happy.

You'll love the out and out power but miss the liveliness of the 'liz.

Oh, and if it doesn't come off, buy Raify's - Cosmos Black Metallic with Red & Black Leather
