Hunt protest halts Parliament
Thousands of protesters are gathering in Parliament Square
Parliament has been suspended after five protesters got into the Commons chamber while MPs debated whether to ban hunting with dogs.
It came as thousands of pro-hunters protest outside Parliament.
Police estimate there are between 8,000 and 10,000 protesters but the organisers put it at 20,000.
The four hour protest has been mostly peaceful but police have used their batons in scuffles with some demonstrators.
MPs are debating the Bill on banning hunting with dogs. A series of votes will be held later in the effort to hold all the Commons stages in one day.

What! Like 'water softeners', 'New TVR slogan', 'best looking girl group', or the rather sad story I have just read on the bbc website about a puppy having to be put down after being used as a football?

Ah, I love the smell of democracy at work.
Government ignores the people. People come out to protest. Government ignore the people. People get p*ssed off.
BBC interviewd a Hunt Master this morning. He reckoned even if banned there is no stopping hunting with hounds. Seems like these are about 100,000 people involved, farmers, huntsmen/women, hound breeders etc, so he reckoned the police would be very hard pressed to stop it if the hunts continue.

They ought to think carefully about why people normally considered pillars of the establishment are getting this riled. Did anyone hear that Guardian columnist spouting on R4 this AM? Basically didn't give a toss about the fox, but wanted hunting banned as symbolic move against "the feudal system" and a move "towards the classless society we all want." Speak for yourself mate. I look up at them, but down on you.
Very little gets me as worked up as the hunting debate, and I'm just a peasant.
As a matter of interest, if hunting with dogs is banned, what happens next time my whippet gets a rabbit? Will she get porridge?

Actually the "we" i meant, was that bunch of jokers currently being held at bay by a load of jodphur wearing looneys... (i.e. the government)
PH is beyond help, so one just rolls with that!

You've got to wonder what's happening to politics in this country when the political debate has become so divorced from the ongoing social debate that, when the former actually affects the latter (but destorying an industrry), people find themselves forced to take direct action.
Just watching the response emerge on NEWS24, and it's solely focused on the security aspect. They're addressing the wrong problem, in my opinion. Why were these people not given a voice through the existing mechania of the country?

Thats entirely it - i swear most of the ban hunting extremists see this as a move within soceity, or indeed of society itself. They gain support because its quite easy to make fox hunting sound horrible and cruel, thus people bay for it to be banned because of the harm to the fox.
Yet - in reality those truely fighting it, don't give a monkeys nostril about the fox. The supporters see themselves as fighting for the fox, the anti-fox hunting militia see it as a vendetta against a gruop of people they simply don't like.
Otherwise how else has it got this far..?
This is another mess of the government's making.
Personally I have always been on the fence about fox hunting. On the one hand, there's poor old foxy woxy -ah, look children isn't he cute - getting chased round the countryside and torn to pieces if he gets caught. On the other hand, poor old foxy woxy is a sly murdering piece of vermin who will murder mercilessly if he gets the chance - just ask any farmer who has had a fox in his chicken run just how cute he thinks foxy woxy is.
The fact that Tony B Liar wants hunting banned along with interfering in many other traditional facets of our way of life is bringing many down on the pro hunt side of things so what we are seeing this afternoon is of his own doing imho.
