John,
New to the Northern Hemisphere and planning a trip to the continent by TVR from the UK. My '99 Chimaera doesn't have a spare at all. Do I really HAVE to have a spare in Germany?

APRT from which they're totally useless unless you just have a small (nail) puncture. Usually you have a rip..........

I brought a new Maserati Ghibli in 97 and that came with 2 cans of that stuff in the boot as standard fitment ???

Are you sure? what about all the lotsu Elise drivers in the world?
I used some tyreweld once when I had a puncture that kwikfit claimed they couldn't fix. I was distinctly broke at the time so I gave the tyreweld a go rather than splash for a tyre. I pumped the tyre up to pressure as soon as the tyreweld was in - and it never lost 1psi ever afterwards.
OK that was a fairly crap car, you might not want to try that trick with your pride and joy!

Is this true?
The Marcos doesn't come with a spare, or anywhere to put one!I think JMG4 you're wrong on the must carry spare tyre front. There are several european approved cars that haven't got spares (i believe Ferarri don't carry spares as well as Elises and Caterhams). Are you sure its not "If a spare tyre is carried it must be road legal"? same as this country.

Is it true that tyreweld won't put enough pressure in to drive on? My Chimaera came with two cans of it instead of a spare, and I want to know if I should now put an air pump in the boot.
Yes it is, and yes you should.
Although two cans might do it, I don't know. Mind you it would probably give you enough to get to a garage with an airline.
I have used the stuff years a go in a Motorbike tyre, it did the job OK also plenty of air in it to inflate a bike tyre.
In fact I left it for weeks before fixing it and it was fine but I wouldn't try it on a fast bike or car except as a get-you-home repair.
I have also used it on a ride-on-mower and it lasted over a year, and was still OK until I bought new tyres - but then top speed is only about 10mph...on grass so a blowout wouldn't be too dangerous!
So yes if you've got no spare and its not a big leak then I think it is good enough to be able to "limp home" but don't know about legality?

Re. Germany - Spare tyre etc
The TÜV has just responded to my e-mail and confirmed
YOU MUST carry a spare wheel at all times!!! There are NO Exceptions!!! Various A2 Audis have been stopped as they also have this aircan solution. Fine and points on the spot!!!
BUT perhaps this is just an over officious bureaucrat? AND if you breakdown on the MWay and the police stop to "help" and have no wheel then you're up the creek with no paddle chaps!!!
N.B. will ask the local MWay plod and come back....
