Rover 200 VI - Any good?
Discussion
Had one of these for three years and loved it. Surprisingly quick, you have to use the gears more than usual and keep the revs up, but that’s all part of the fun.
Of all the cars I’ve had, it’s the only one that never let me down, or have any work carried out on it. (Other than normal servicing)

I'm sorely tempted to get one of these myself. You can get a reasonable one for around £2000 which is roughly what mine is worth (I think) and it would be substantially more lively. Only worries would be insurance (Im nearly 19) and the head gasket as K-series have a reputation.
I think I will end up struggling on with my very slow escort for a while though

I must admit my only concern is the head gasket issue. Although, I think I'm right in saying that these failures are only a result of poor maintenance????So if you have a full service history, shouldn't be a problem.(right or wrong, advice please.)
Same engine as the MGF (the 160bhp one)...the VVC lump. See MG threads for comments on that...personally I'm not convinced.
Looks like any other hatchback, so would make a good Q-car, if only for the fact that no-one would believe a Rover can go that fast!!!
Crude suspension though - torque-steers, and the short wheelbase makes it a bit unpredictable at the back, but without the feedback/communication that made the 205GTi such fun.

I have a 200vi along with a vx. I use the 200 for the daily commute. I can say its a good Q- car nobody would notice it till it takes off. It is basically the same as a zr 160 but with different suspension settings. The ride is better but a little squashier as a consequence. For 2 grand its much faster than most of the boy racer objects about and very comfortable and really decently quick. I dont feel short changed driving this during the week after spending the weekend with the vx and a zt 260 v8. The k - series will be fine after '98 if before that then all it needs is care, mine has never failed. I would recommend one of these for the money any day, and that bumph about the back is crap, its bloody hard to coax the back out on it, your just regurgitating standard fwd criticisms. It doesnt really torque steer that much either as you need to dial up v high revs to get at the necessary torque. If you can stand the red leather interior check out a 200brm, it has a closer ratio box and stiffer suspension.

I'm thinking of getting the aforementioned as my daily driver. Does anyone have any experience of these? Are they good or bad?
edited for typo.

I'm a huge fan of these, rapid little hatch. Depending on budget it might be worth looking for a limited edition BRMedited for typo.

hummm. I think I could be talked into this one if I can find a good one.Although the red interior of the BRM is not my cup of tea. What insurance like on the VI just out of curiosity?
