I'd say Henri Toivonen, I believe he still is the youngest winner of WCR ever. Who would be your choise?

He was, but what that's got to do with it I don't know!

Giles was a bit spesh in my book.

For all round driver, with the track record to prove it I'm not sure anyone could ever match Mario Andretti - he could do it all in anything.

For a gutsy out and out racer, ignoring his dodgy 'tache and accent if you can, my fave is still:

Red 5 - our Nige!

Never forget some of the moves he pulled off against the likes of Senna and Prost.

Jim Clark, (made any car go fast. even with a dodgy car, or mechanical problem could fend off opposition)

Jackie Stewart,(the smoothest of the smooth, absolute genius, the first sport professional of ANY sport.)

Tazio Nuvolari, (50 years before his time)

Gilles Villeneuve, (sideways and F1!!)

Roger Clark, (inspired a generation)

Ari Vatanen,( mk2 Escort, scottish forest, need i say more!)

Henri Toivenan, (sp.!) (came closest to taming Group B monsters)

Colin McRae, (stunning car control)

Ayrton Senna, ( took driving to a different level. totally dedicated)

Francois Cevert, (v under-rated, could match Stewart on occasions)

Richard Burns (also v under-rated, matched McRae on pace a lot and always takes machine home)

Assuming you mean Fangio? Does rather make Schumacher look like a formula ford driver. Can't remember the exact details but i think he won 3 world championships in three and a half years of competing.

Mike The Bike.

Or maybe John Surtees, for swinging both ways.

And Barry Sheene deserves a special mention for getting back on after that crash...

Cheers

Walter Rohrl & Michael Schumacher
In a motoring magazine recently they revealed the results of a poll taken of a large number of professional rally drivers, active and retired. The question was, "Who was/is the all-time greatest rally driver?"
His fellow drivers voted Walter Rohrl as the all-time greatest. Rohrl himself voted for one of the Finnish greats, although a different Finn came second overall.
Colin McRae voted for himself.

Walter Rohl, humble and one of the best, achieved outstanding track times on Pikes Peak without even knowing the track.

Tazio Nuvolari:heroic 30's racer of Auto Union (Audi) Supercharged 1.5 litre V16s!
You Needed to be a hero to master those machines, when racing was truly competitive! Through the 1930s and into the 1940s his reputation for skill and bravery eclipsed a whole generation of rivals. Even today his name alone evokes a classic era in the history of road and Grand Prix racing.

My two penneth worth...

Gilles, undisputed no 1

Ronnie Peterson, ran Gilles close for a season, would have been good to see them race together for longer.

JJ Lehto, 1995 Le Mans, 14 seconds a lap quicker in the rain, at night, than anyone else. Nuff said.

Nigel Greensall?! Makes anything from sportscars to M3s to F1 Tyrrells go bl00dy quick.

And finally, Jean Alesi. The only man since Villeneuve to have his raw speed and passion to make an unwealdy Ferrari go quicker than it wanted it to.
