I know middle lane numpties are evil and must be destroyed.

However, I have a confession to make.

On the M3 I am a middle lane driver. Simply cos the left hand lane is so chewed up by lorries I don't like driving in it. My car gets pulled from side to side and it feels a bit scary. I feel much more comfortable in the middle lane as its flat. The bit from Farnborough to Basingstoke is horrible.

Discuss.

The middle lane numptie thing is something which people keep bringing up because it has become fashionable.
If you drive down some parts of the North Circ in the n/s lane you can take your hands off the wheel and the car with sit in the grooves it is so bad. Great for eating your lunch and having a drink whilst driving(joke) but not much good if you need to brake hard because the car goes all over the place.
Some roads are so busy that you end up zig zaging for miles to try and stay in the "correct" lane so I don't bother. If I am going faster than all the cars in the n/s lane I stay in the middle lane and if someone wants to go faster than me they can overtake in the outside lane.
If I actually come across a road with little traffic then I use the n/s lane. Whenever I drive outside the UK I mostly use the correct lane, the reason is the standard of roads are much better and there is less traffic.
There is no such thing as a middle lane numptie, there are however cr@p drivers who drive the same way on all roads without adapting to the road/traffic conditions. There is a time and a place for everything

I know what you mean, Jimothy. At first I thought it was just my car that tramlined badly on the inside lane of the M3 (it's a 300ZX with wider than standard wheels), but even my wife's Alfa 156 doesn't like it.

Catch it in the right light and you can actually see the "tracks" made by the heavy trucks.

I agree that stretch is bad, i reckon that is the reason for middle lane hogging. It must be the same on every motorway as the M3 has a similar amount of traffic as any other motorway.

Yes but hogging the middle lane AND driving at 50 is what annoys most people. Keep your speed up to 70 and watch your mirrors to get out of the way should faster traffic need the space (even temporarily) and everyone is happy.

I have wider fronts and a pretty sensitve geo on the elise which doesnt like the ruts lorrys have carved into the inside lane of many motorways. I tend to drive at/above 70 anyway (when conditions allow) so cant really see a problem with using the ML. I do use my mirrors with leaner like frequency so am pretty aware of what's going on behind me.

So if i'm in the nearside lane doing 70+, and catch you up in the middle lane doing 70, do you expect me to go all the way around you, or should I overtake you on the inside?

You shouldn't be doing over 70 anyway

I wouldn't recommend overtaking me on the inside on teh M3, changing to the left hand lane will cause your car to be pulled into the lorry tracks, possibly causing you to lose control and crash.

i'm not saying what I do is right. In an ideal world I would drive that stretch of the M3 in the left hand lane, but until that road is maintained better, I'll stay in the middle.

Does make you wonder why you pay your car/petrol tax!

Whether you are in lane 2 or 3 (on the 3-lane road), just don't get in people's way.

But you'd be an irresponsible and illegal motorist, the man in the middle lane doing 70 is doing you a favour by regulating your speed.

So the millions, indeed, majority of m-way users who shuffle along in their mode of perpetual centralised oblivion aren't morons?

They ARE insects and worse still, conceivably vote Labour.

Ammend your theories, Von Ribol!

When a BMW M3 gets in your way, are you allowed to drive down the centre of the M3 to get past?
