Why didn`t he just place an ad which says........

Hi, I transport high value jewelery across europe in Golf VR6s. Arrange to view the car so you can find out where I live and then bash me on the bonce later!

Joke btw. I`m sure he has more sense than that.

Maybe the performance was an issue.. incase he was chased.

Maybe the £10k saving on Diesel wasnt 'an issue' given the earnings he was making.

Maybe diesel isnt that much cheaper/easily available in the countries he was driving in.

Maybe he liked to poke the petrol engine around the lanes

From personal experience the people who do these runs are highly suspicious (obviously) don't be surprised if its got some tweeks and it'll be on run-flats. They want fast, strong and weighty but compact so if needs be they can drive through any obstacles but its small enough to "do one" through a back lane.

Put it this way when you've got a cargo so valuable you don't trust anyone else to move it you aren't going to flinch at 50K on fuel. Tuned Classic 900 T16's were the weapon of choice 10 years ago, a local Saab dealer used to look after them, Lexan side windows (bullet and smash proof) and a safe in the boot were essential modifications.

blimey, what a rather a cool car for a very cool job.

we could draw parallels with many other cars and what they would be best suited to for discreet, trans-european, rapid transportation ...

mazda mx5 - budgies

bmw 325 coupe - vodka

volvo xc90 - stamps

tvr sagaris - lingerie

morgan aero8 - manuscripts

aston martin db9 - faberge eggs

mercedes slk - truffles

rover 75 - port

ford mustang - pornography

ferrari 360 - asparagus

....

You don't want to get into that business. Runs include various eastern european pickups and we can guess how much certain large gentlemen who reside their would like to relieve you of the cargo you happen to be carrying should they find out what transport your using, add to that the fact that R32's, M5's, M3's, T5's etc. aren't exactly common in those parts and your pretty much advertising the fact of what your upto.

However if its just the odd run to France then thats all good, but you won't get the hardened fast cars or big money for those!

No idea what the money is like, a friend of a friend used to do it for a living and it was certainly enough for him to live off comfortabley.

As far as I know EU/Transit paperwork is all sorted and above board, but I suppose the grey area is just how much they declare is being moved.
