I've gotta ask, cause i'm obviously having a blonde moment. What in your profile, do you have that can accelerate that quickly? Sounds very fast whatever you were in. Congratulations.

Edited to say:
Except maybe the 'Chevrolet Rail Car'......
I'll get my coat!

Right, I'm at home now and slightly more calm after a rather adrenalised weekend!

For those of you that don't know, for the last 18 months I've been working with a team building a dragster, and this weekend all of our efforts have come to fruition.

So we convoyed up to the race track early on Saturday morning and set-up the pits and our "camp", the low mist gave us some good time to tinker and make sure that we were 100% happy with the car.

The mist lifted, we warmed the car through and took it down to the start line. At this point things all seemed very alien, the team have run a drag "car" before, but it was a modified Audi 80 Sport.. a rear engined dragster is a slightly different kettle of fish.

So with the car reversed into the waterbox a first gear burnout ensued.. Lovely, worked well, but hitting the rev-limiter too soon without really scrubbing the tyres.

A gentle launch without using the transbrake gave us a relatively respectable first time (I'm afraid I can't remember the actual timings, but i think it was in the 12's or 13's)..

Happy with this we moved onto launching with the transbrake, a cunning device that holds the gearbox in reverse whilst first is selected, a proper run with this produced a mid 11 second pass... good..

Onto the more tedious stuff, we needed to get our licensing passes out of the way, so had to be observed to do the following:

1.) Burnout & Launch
2.) Half Pass
3.) Full Pass
4.) Full Pass with Parachute Deployment
5.) Emergency Cockpit Evacuation.

We managed to put in the burnout and launch on Saturday before calling things a day and returning to the caravan (sorry, I mean pits!) to cogitate and consider our plan of attack for Sunday.

Early rise on Sunday gave us plenty of time to tinker, and some small engine changes and a drop in tyre pressure brought alarming results on the half pass...

We'd gone faster on the half pass than we had on Saturday’s full passes (ie we only went on power for half the track, but went quicker than full track Saturday)..

Half pass out of the way and the car cooled sufficiently we lined up to make our full pass.. The changes we'd made to the car had turned it from a slightly moody child into a mass-murdering-rip-your-face-off-b**tard, it sounded like a completely different engine to Saturday!

So a very strong burnout followed by a hard launch saw the car accelerate from 0-101 in 6.8 seconds and onto a 1/4 mile time of 10.7 @ 122Mph...

Full pass done, we almost replicated the run exactly with our parachute deployment run..

All in all a fantastic weekend, and a most fantastic result to show for 18 months hard work...

Now where did I put that blower

Looks and sounds great. I guess I'll run into you during the season as I crew with Urs Erbacher on his methanol funny car (FIA champions 2003/4). Will be at the Main Event, and testing the weekend before at the Pod. I should bring out my snowmobile (screaming 2 stroke triple) for a play then, so you can't miss us.

It makes me laugh when we mix it at RWYB days - always get the "how fast to 60?" questions - we don't know because we log at 100mph - in 1 second dead!

max.

I've always liked the road legal sleeper cars that can put in reasonable drag times. A fat 60's camaro would be nice :P

Well done, I wish I had wandered down to see it now, but BG is blocked into the garage by a skip on the drive, it would have been fun to have put him on the RWYB. 10.7 sounds pretty impressive for its 1st outing.

Not right now, but with some work it's feasible, the trouble we have is the "strength" of the engine, it's an old block, so it's feasible we could loose it at some point..

With a cam change we could put out a lot more horsespower, and of course there's the thought of a supercharger in our minds (£1200 for a boxed solution, charger, pulleys 2 x 650 carbs etc etc)..

But we're bracket racing, it's a class that rewards consistency, not out and out speed, so the fact that we're running within tenths if not hundedths each run is going to stand us in good stead..

But yeah, one day, we'll break into the nine's!, btw, the chassis is good for low 8's

oh, another thing I remembered..

That 0-101 was by the 1/8th...

Yes, that's one eighth of a mile to accelerate to 101Mph

The only reason I keep posting these facts is to try to get them into my head..

I still can't quite beleive it!
