Road Tax in America?
Discussion
"What?!" I hear you thinking...
Im doing my dissertation on hybrid electric vehicles and was trying to find out any info about car tax in america, to no avail as yet.
Does anyone know if the US charges annual road tax like here in the Uk? If you can shed any light it would be a big help!
Ps. I realise that im likely to attract some piss taking for posting this thread, but if you could answer the question THEN take the piss, that would also be a big help!
Pps. piss taking optional

It seems they do charge - Motor Vehicle Excise Tax at about 2%-3% of a vehicle's depreciated value.
A google for MVET might shed some light.
HTH
You legend, thanks very much!
Quite telling that US road tax has nothing to do with emissions and/or size of car...

Found this at:

"Those listed below qualify for an exemption.
Blind:
permanent impairment of vision in both eyes
must own and register for their own personal use
must submit either a certificate from the Division of the Blind or a physician's letter"
Im hoping they dont allow blind people loose behind the wheel in the US!!

The US in general doesn't charge road tax like the UK.
There are federal personal income tax breaks for the users of electric and zero emision vehicles. There is a small amount of federal tax on fuel that -was- earmarked for road building, but who really know where it goes today.
The country doesn't monitor, tax, or otherwise keep track of cars. The individual states do, and they allow free movement between the states.
Most states tax the owner as part of a annual registration fee. That fee earns you a registration sticker for the windshield or a license plate. The charge for registration varies greatly, from as little as US$8.00 to an astounding US$950.00. The fee usually varies with either vehicle value, or weight.
Other car charges that we face are a small one-time fee to change the ownership papers of a car (the title) from the old owner to the new owner. Usually a slightly higher fee when the vehicle is changing hands AND changing states as the new state will require additional emmisions testing. California is the exception, they will not accept some out of state vehicles, and charge a LOT to certify and allow others. Most states have an annual low cost vehicle inspection like the MOT. Our inspections are not anywhere as strict. Usually emisions, light operation and aiming, wipers, brakes, gross steering control and the exaust condition are all that are tested. In addition to the federal fuel tax, each state and some municipalities also levy tax against fuel. It's loosely earmarked for road maintaince, but much of it is openly sent to the general state fund for use as they see fit. We pay a small additional tax on tires and batteries that funds recycling and disposal of those items.
