I've discovered that if I disconnect a pipe leading to my airbox my car makes an amazing induction roar but only when I boot it! Obviously this is a cheap way to make a nice sound, but is it doing any harm? I would presume that this is a cold air feed, so would performance be affected?

Oh, and can you get a Tubi system for a Clio?!

Erm. Be sure the air is still going through the filter.........

As long as you are not bypassing the air filter then it should not be harming the engine. If it is a cold air feed then removing it could reduce power, though not neccessarily harm the engine. Also, some engines have their intake lengths tuned to take advantage of pulses, so removing any of the plumbing could also reduce this effect.

Its fine, people do it on the S2000 all the time, its a free way to make noise and the S doesnt make much as standard - its also a way to lose power. People om the S2000 community are generally of the opinion it makes the car less responsive, hot air being sucked in I guess.

Id swear my alfa actually makes more induction noise than exhaust. Thinking about getting hold of the stock airbox setup..... then again, maybe not

What i need is a switch - noise / no noise

It's the same with an SC gearbox, you hear one coming towards you and it sounds neat, try sitting behind it at 80 on the motorway going EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE or in your case RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I reckon quiet engines are a good idea. It will just make you deaf after a while.

I know your Alfa is a 1988 model so doesn't qualify as "modern" (which is probably a good thing as it is therefore a "proper Alfa") but if modern cars are to make any nice sound at all (sound quality) they typically now have to do it via induction noise rather than exhaust. This is due to the Draconian European noise regs that force a very low 74 DB external limit on noise.

The other option is to do what BMW do and to have a flap in the exhaust system that opens once above a certain rpm/load (i.e: once out of the NVH regulation "test window"!)to give nice noise and simultaneously lower back pressure.
The other option is to do a Lexus and not bother with sound QUALITY and just make the car boringly quiet! Americans will still lap them up!

Likewise,I have to put a baffle in to get it down to 103db.Quite shocked the road regs are so low.

I've reconnected it now - i was struggling to keep up with a Legacy!

Although it sounds good, it does affect power. but it does sound nice!

This is for OEM manufacturers. You can still fit louder aftermarket pipes (within limits).
I don't know how TVR get away with their fruity sounding cars, possibly something to do with small volume sales?

A good example is the Chevy Corvette-5, which had to have extra silencing added when imported and sold over here. Needlesss to say the US regulations aren't as strict when it comes to noise emission.
