Pistonheads chat room????
Discussion
Who knows what IRC is?
I think we should setup a chatroom on irc so people could just lurk and chat, reducing theit work output even more... Ted you could add a link to a web based IRC client so anyone could get in on the act...
It would be really easy to set one up on quaketnet, any takers?

I'm with Ted, chat rooms is not really the right format IMHO for PH. I like the fire and forget nature of a board, chat is just too 'busy' if you know what I mean.
Added to which posting to a web board is bit easier to hide than constantly having a chat client open.
Also those of us behind firewalls controlled by the sphincter police is going to be very very very difficult to justify.
Matt.
Edited because my grammar is shite when I've had a few!

Chat rooms don't work for motoring subjects. Forums work well as people have time to constructive interesting arguments. Chat rooms are only really popular amongst flirting teenagers.
I thought we were all teenagers at heart
I agree with you Ted, forums are much better as response are better formulated. However I guess this would be more aimed at the community part of Pistonheads. All specific questions, topics etc. would still go to the forums...

I have my 'ALT-TAB' combo down to a fine art... I had it timed at 0.037 seconds

Obvious web thicky question
What's the difference between a discussion forum and a chat room ?

Discussion forums are update and refresh based, so you post and when you refresh the screen you see your post. Chat rooms on the other hand are real time, as soon as you press enter your post is available for all to see. Its also not static so if you log off you lose the history of whats been said.
Matt.
chat rooms are real time.
Pretty much like this thread considering all the last posts in under 10 mins.
The reason I like IRC over MSN, is that MSN is already web based, therefore it would remove page impressions from Pistonheads which might affect advertising etc.
However IRC is client based with browser pluggins, so Ted can add a link from somewhere which leads to the room, therefore being the entry point and still getting all the hits that Pistonheads requires and deserves...

However my company uses Sametime Connect which is part of AOL Instant Messenger...
Two entirely separate products, old chap. SameTime is a product from Lotus and requires CALs etc. Advantages over AOL, MSN, NetMeeting etc is that you can run screaming audio and video across SameTime. If you wanted to use SameTime you'd need a SameTime server, whereas every other product you mention is freeware

Almost. It seems if you have an AOL Instant Messenger sign on then you can view your buddies on AOL via the Sametime window.
