When Richard Hammond did the 2CV race in 2003, The Stig (who was allegedly Perry McCarthy at the time) was supposed to be racing too. "The Stig" couldn't make it, and if I remember rightly, Perry was racing at Le Mans. Ben Collins however, was there and he did race.

Shortly afterwards The old Stig was "drowned" and the new one introduced.

It's been suggested to me that it's Ben Collins.

About 6 months back the Sunday Times did a bit on Perry McCarthy and revealed him as the Stig, albeit before he was drowned on TG.

Ben Collins appeared as the "Racing driver friend" of that guy who was trying to parachute into the back of the Mercedes CLK convertible, and was one of the drivers on the Toyota 5-a-side football.

And also the guy driving down the hill against the skateboard thing.

The entire concept of the Stig is that it doesn't hae to be the same bloke everytime. That and Clarkson has a secret desire to have his very own driving gimp after watching Pulp Fiction.

I supect that the various drivers who appeared in both classic people carrier racing and the Toyota football features are probably the Stig now and again. Of those drivers Ben Collins is the driver most often linked with the show, however Clarkson has worked with Tim Harvey quite regulary too.

Possibly because he never stops to check himself in the mirror, never puts scratches or dents in the cars, and is never seen trying to reverse into a space an artic could fit into and it up?

True, but name a female racing driver who could put in the lap times that the stig has.

I was actually going to join in the female driver bashing. However, a female racing driver did just finish 2nd in the Indy 500, after leading for most of it. She is also quite pleasing on the eye (see here)
