Tyre Fault?

Hmmm. It appears that just one of my new tyres is doing this after about 1500 miles.

I'm pretty sure that's not good.

They're wearing evenly, and it's not scrubbed. Just looks like the surface layer is delaminating or something.

Anyone seen anything like this before? How worried should I be?

Nah. Eagle F1, which I rate highly most of the time.

Interesting I've just put a set of F1's of the rear of me Tiv and TBH the handling is shite now even after 500 miles on bedding the blody things in .
Perhaps I should be looking out for my tread to be lifting off the tyre carcase pretty soon then .

Looking at it again, it looks like the resulting mess of the remoulds they do in the Philippines, where they will vulcanise you some more tread onto your rim whilst you wait at the side of the road , you have to see it to beleive it .

I was going to say that the nearest I've seen to that was on a 375 Ford Consul I had in the '60's with remoulds on. After a "spirited" 75 mph run on the new motorway I heard a flapping noise. On examining the tyres, the tread was lifting just like this only worse, a whole section had detached and was going round flapping the road. I've NEVER bought remoulds since.

Not suggesting that you're a skinflint or anything F1's are expensive, but it does look like a manufacturer fault. Take them back, remember that the dealer is liable,don't get fobbed off, did you use your credit card to buy them? Go to them if the dealer doesn't want to know. Unfit for purpose?

All this of course as long as you've NOT been track daying recently.

Would you not need a complete set of 4 to see the benefits? F1s are easily the best tyres I've tried on my Alfa to date.

All remoulds look like that after before final finishing. Then some gimp (one of my summer jobs years ago ) has to use a grinding wheel to remove the flash which can flap around. With remoulds, the flash has no impact on the integrity of the tyre but would still fail the MOT

Indeed not. She's been used very lightly over the last 6 months.

I've just spoken to goodyear. Tyres are covered for 5 years, so I'm good there. I just have to pursuade them to change all 4 as I'm not happy at all.

Right - update.

Been down to Hi-Q, which are owned by Goodyear. Eddie at Hi-Q, he say "Eurrrgh. I've never seen an Eagle F1 do that. Don't drive it".

Goodyear customer service, they say "Send them back, get 4 more and if we find a fault in one of the ones you have sent back, we'll cover the cost of all 4 new ones".

Can't really say fairer than that I suppose. Top marks to Hi-Q and goodyear customer service then.

That sounds pretty good actually. Suppose it's in their interest as otherwise they could be liable if something happened.

Right - Update.

I've had a "sorting things out day" and finally got around to ringing Goodyear. Spoke to the technical chap on the phone.

Goodyear agree that there is a fault. They think it's merely cosmetic, and once the top layer has delaminated then the tyres would have been fine.

They also agree that this isn't a part of the car you take chances with, and at well over 110 quid each they should damn well be perfect.

They have refunded the total cost of all 4 new tyres.

So, top marks for Goodyear then.
