WHAT's THE BEST DAB Car Stereo??? Blau v JVC
Discussion
Hi Guys . .Please help as I am a bit confused . .Been thinking of fitting a DAB digital radio in to my car . .Phoned a few shops and been told that it basically comes down to choosing between JVC and a BLAUPUNKT . . .
Which one would you honestly reccomend . .Every shop has an opininon , but it always seems to veer to the one they have in stock . .
What do you think??? I have a feeling there is very little to choose between them.(both top of the range) .and that its just a question of styling . .And what abt internal v external antennas . . .Is the quality of reception affected . . .
Hope to hear from you soon and thanks in advance!

I often get suspicious about the shops preferring the one they have in stock. But look at it another way - if you sold two different makes of the same thing, and you always recommend one of them over the other, you'd make sure you have better stocks of the one you recommend. I know it's open to abuse, you have to get a 'feel' for the shop or person that's doing the recommending in my opinion.

New Sony one
With that Sony one do you need anything more, i.e. an aerial, or is that £219 100% complete?!

Please check that your car does not have a coated windscreen that may affect the reception of your DAB radio. If this is the case you can install an external DAB aerial.
Windscreen Internal DAB Aerial is supplied
Thanks! Yeah I did see that, but previously when I've looked at DAB radios it's always been £200 for a head unit, then another £150 for an aerial/receiver type thing (I admit I know nothing about them).
The radio in my Elise is sh...not very good and so was thinking about changing to a DAB.
Hmmm...thanks, you may have just spent me a couple of hundred notes

Yet again I'd say that unless you are a serial "early -adopter" I'd stay clear of DAB for a while. There are two problems.
One. The system used in Europe is struggling to find favour outside of Europe. The USA and Japan are going down a completley different path with no compression. Hence as you have found not many "head" units are available.
Two. As usual in order to obtain the most REVENUE the data rate for a channel keeps being cut. This means you get more channels but sound quality far from being "CD " quality is is worse than MP3. This situation is only going to get worse as OFCOM wants more channels at the expense of quality.

I have a blaupunkt DAB 54. It works well and it comes with an areil that sticks on the inside of a window so no new holes. Other ariels are available. cheapest Ive seen it was £280 ish though
good thing is mine came with a 128 meg memory card so i just down load tracks streight onto that from the PC. dont need to mess around creating CD's

a) How often do you drive your car in the USA/Japan?
b) "No compression" - I very much doubt it! Different compression maybe, but so what? I fail to see how that has any bearing on the decision to buy a DAB head unit or not in the UK...
(I guess you're refering to the satellite based radio services like Xm/Sirius there. They still use compression of the digital bitstream, and the bitrates are similar to that used by DAB, however they use a more advanced codec. They are apparently going through the same more channels/lower bitrate developments that people have moaned about with DAB though...)
btw, you can see where DAB is being used/developed worldwide here:

There will always be the temptation to squeeze in more channels with any digital radio system. I'm not sure I'd agree with your use of "keeps" there though (you can only reduce is so many times before there's nothing left ;-)
At some point in the future, there may be alternative digital radio systems available (eg www.drm.org/ - note, they describe DRM as "near FM quality"...), but they're a fair way off yet, and a long way behind DAB.
FWIW the Blaupunkt woodstock DAB head units are based on the same chipset as the Pure Evoke range of radios (IIRC)...

i BOUGHT FROM that particular shop because I was in a hurry . .I was planning to put it in a new car, and I can only get to the dealer at the w/e . .I was not planning on haggling or anything . .But what got to me was was that he made it sound like he was throwing in a dab antenna free because he was nice . . .What a d**K!
I knew all the time he was over charging!Next time when I'm not in a hurry I will be more selective . . .
What I find abt shops in London, they like to produce a lot of waffle, and its seldom I can ever get a straight answer out of people . .Anyhow . .What's done is done . . .What ever you do , stay away from that shop . .Its in dawes lane in mill hill (north london)

Hi all, depending on what your existing stereo is like (if it's a good 'un you wont want to change the whole thing) you could always check this out (it won the Best Product award in the recent Autoexpress awards). Havn't got one, myself...... Anyone tried it ? www.revo.co.uk/ Just a thought. Cheers, Jon
