Goodwood sparkles again
Astons dominate Festival of Speed 2005
The Festival of Speed 2005 is done, with the last day yesterday seeing some great cars basking in the seasonal sunshine, and spectator sunburn much in evidence.
Among the highlights were:

- Jaguar's new XK plus an unannounced project in light disguise
- Ferrari SuperAmerica
- Spyker C8 Spyder
- Lamborghini Murcielago roadster
- TVR Tuscan 2
- TVR Sagaris
- Invicta S1
- Ford GT
- Some gorgeous old Bugattis showing what a Bugatti is supposed to look like
- Alfa Romeo Brera
- BMW M6
- Morgan Aero
- Venturi Fetish
- Maserati Birdcage
Among the non-car highlights were a ground-shaking display by the swing-wing Tornado fighter plane showing off a power-to-weight ratio to die for, especially with afterburners on. Cornering could have been a bit more controlled though...

Yes, brilliant. I went on Saturday, and had an amazing day. Personal Highlights:
- Takuma Sato’s loud, smoky and plentiful donuts along the hillclimb
- the vintage motorcylces that out-shouted almost everything else on parade
- seeing supercars and priceless racing classics all lined up together before the hillclimb. What a glorious sight/noise
- the Maserati Birdcage, which was stunning in motion and beautifully crafted up close
- Morgan Aero Max; the Swiss millionare who paid for that must be one very, very happy man
- the Zonda who’s driver spun it into the straw barriers (got a video of it)
- Aston Martin DB4 Zagato in the Cartier area. My heart aches
- how similar the Aston Martin V8 Vantage looks to its siblings; would still have one though - me and half the crowd at the supercar paddock.
This was the first time I’ve seen anything like this, and I have tons of pics for the memories: www.raadius.co.uk/forum/gallery001.html
I'm hooked - I won't be missing FOS 2006 for the world.

I was there all 3 days this year. Fantastic weekend.
Funniest part was on Saturday when some bloke interviewed Nick Mason after he had driven the Mazzer Birdcage up the hill:
Interviewer "So Nick have you ever driven one of the original Birdcages?"
Nick Mason - "Errr......Actually I own 2 of them"
Interviewer - "Oh"

Possibly one of the best weekends of my life, filled with some of the most beautiful sights and glorious sounds from motoring history. The F1 paddock's display of historic cars and bikes was truly mesmerizng. When I got into the Cartier 'Style et Luxe' area, I really did not know which way to turn. I thought that I had died and gone to petrol heaven. I shall definitely be going back next year. Highlights for me were: getting to chat to some of the legends of the Indy 500; seeing the DB9R up close; seeing the bikes the took Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman around the World; and nearly getting my right eardrum perforated by the Honda bikes during testing whilst crouching on the floor next to them

...what was the matter with the other half? sunstroke?
Thanks for sharing, I'm pretty gutted as well that I couldn't go this year.
I was there all 3 days with a fellow piston-header.
Highlights were getting into the F1 paddock & wondering around chatting to Derek Bell (what a top guy) my friend got his jacket signed by him & a couple of photo's. Then being 3 feet away & seeing (& hearing !) the F1 cars leave for their circuit lap - fantastic !
My dads Daimler was in the Style et Luxe enclosure & came second in the final judging, just being pipped to first place, a real result as he was up against proper "show cars" while his was just a restoration project that he was asked to show there.
We camped on Saturday night & were joined by the bbq by a family camping next to us - the chap had just taken delivery of a brand new Aston DB9 so we drunk beer round a camp fire all night.
Added to that a nice fun spirited drive there & back, all in all the best ever FOS for me.
Roll on FOS 2006 !

You bet. I'll post a link to it later this evening, as well as a short clip of the classic racers lined up, all gunning their motors before the hillclimb. There are no no words to describe that, so I won't even bother
So many gorgeous machines there, but some special memories from Friday.
The sound of the 1966 Honda RC166 being fired up. 6 cylinders and 6 open pipes, so loud and what a wonderful wailing noise.
The 1975 Matra V12 sports car. I shut my eyes as it howled its way up the hill, it took me back to Spa 30 years ago.
And finally, when the heavens opened and the road was streaming wet, the last few cars tip toed up the hill, but not Peter Hardman in the DBR1. He was giving it the beans, wheels spinning everywhere and that lovely straight 6 howling all the way up the hill.
Simply magic.

Me and 2 mates were there on the sunday, it was terrible....
...cos there wasn't enough time to see everything we wanted to - just too much stuff going on - do we get a grandstand seat to watch the F1 cars, do we wait by the finish to see the drivers, do we wait at the start to see them lining up, decisions decisions.
An excellent day (again). Went last year and intend to go next year too (for more than one day).

Agree with that, I was there Saturday and didn't really have enough time / energy to see everything I wanted to. Wasn't helped by the policeman who, in trying to direct us to gate 8 (where our tickets were) sent us straight into the car park at the exact opposite end of the site.
Next time, I'm going for 2 days.
By the way, did anyone else see that Scamera Partnership stall? I had to bite my tongue hard when I walked past that...
