Pay back time, here goes..
Phoned up a car dealer today to enquire about a cheap motor. Exacly what I wanted, right colour, hatchback, Leather interior, Air con etc.. etc.. 1995 M reg 90K miles on the clock. Sounds Ok. I said to the dealer, describe the overall condition of the car and has it had any major repairs etc.. "No mate really good condition..Quote "I don't sell crap cars."
So I set off on a 220 mile round trip to Avonmouth near Bristol, cash in pocket, drivers licence etc.
Got to the dealer saw a complete pile of
dog
so I said "
Me !! i've driven 110 miles to see this
, you
" (I was quite unhappy.) Every panel was scratched or dented, air-con and windows did not work, it wasn't worth a
Name and shame time. Shirehampton Motors, salesman called Chris or

Good on ya Prancing! Some dealers spend so much energy lying when honesty will bring the same customer back and they normally tell friends/PHers about said dealer.
I can remember the location and name of evey single dealer who has been honest with me. This includes two bike dealers (Motorcycle City) who have talked me out of buying a Ducatti and an R1 and pointed me towards bikes costing a tenth of the price due to my lack of biking experience. I'm sure there are others out there who would sell the high priced machinery regardless of customer ability.
I'm pi$$ed that this guy had you traveling such a distance to see a heap on junk. I'm sure he'll get his one day when a big b@$tard who's into full contact sports turns up after a long trip to see the same piece of junk(here's hoping anyway)

Prancing- sounds like he took a punt that you would still buy the car even though the shortcomings were obvious. And as he is unlikely to see you again (certainly now, probably before that too) didn't feel he had anything to lose. Hasn't he heard of the internet?
Know what MaranelloUK means about remembering the dealers who've played it straight with you. It's because they're exceptions. It still surprises me that sports car dealers are on the whole, and in my experience, rather poor ambassadors for their marque. When you find people who play it straight with you, and would rather not sell you a car at all than sell you the wrong one, then you remember them. They've banked future business against short term gain and you have to be pretty enlightened to do this.

This is to be commended.

Nah - they just do that cos they know you'll get bored and come back to them to trade up. I bet they screw you at trade in time.
Grrr Motorcycle City Grrr
When 'er indoors was looking for a bike we found a CBR600 and when she asked the salesman if she could take it for a test ride they replied 'No, we dont generally allow test rides on 2nd hand bikes'.
To which 'er indoors replied 'Oh OK, in that case I would like to try a 2002 R1 in Silver' which rather astonishingly they agreed to. So she spanked the pants off that for a while, said it was very nice and we left.
Matt.

The only difference between Daley into Europe's fine carriages of distinction and the most oily, pin-striped dealer of Italian thoroughbreds is the amount of money being transacted.
The car business is no different to any other; it's there to try and eek out a living in a society that has made being in business akin to pursuing a career in serial rape.
This doesn't excuse sh1te service but it does explain it sometimes and the inexorable tide of red tape and belligerent consumerism which is contributing to the protacted dismemberment of Albion.
By substituting traditional, mild mannered Englishness with the excessive aggression of US style advocacy-induced litigation, egged on by a media full to the brim with pompous, sanctimonious, self-serving hypocrites all to eager to feed this disease (rabid consumerism), we are royally screwing the what little marrow is left in the bones of our characteristic national body.
Bleargh.

Does anyone get the impression that Derestrictor is trying too hard to get that BTAP award for most obfuscated postings?
No John, I am just weary at the state of play in the UK today.
I'm just waiting for the letter that comes through the post informing me that the authorities wish to remove one of my internal organs because some Bosnian shed dweller with a passion for diced human bladder has more rights than me in my own Goddam country.
It now appears that one of my local m-way routes is about to play host to that most pernicious icon of motorist suppression, the SPECS camera.
It seems that in every walk of life, we are suffering at the hands of a vice-like clasp and it's creed is 'preventism.'
Shocking stuff.
