car crash/insurance query!
Discussion
first off, i dont know much about car insurance, only i have it (fully comp and they take money form me each month) i drove into the back of a car on monday.
cant be bothered to go into details but he stopped to let a car out and i drove into the back of him at about 5mph! v.embarrasing
my insurance co contacted me today to say that his insurance co have been in touch and he is pursuing a claim. my question is this; as i wont be claiming on my policy (the damage is minimal and its a 12 year old fiesta at any rate) will my no claims vanish or will i keep it and is any increase in my premium realitive ot the accident or will it be a set amount.

I'll ignore the DYRWIS card gags and other thread gags (only cos they've just been done
)
You'll lose your no-claims, cos although YOU haven't claimed on your insurance, someone else has. A payout has been made becasue of a mistake that YOU made and that is what you are insuring against.
As for increases, yep you'll get one, cos you've now got no no-claims. Unless of course you have no-claims protection ......

or you could settle with the other party directly and avoid the claim on your insurance... (assuming a v.low bill for a 5mph shunt)

But you would still have to tell any insurance companies, because it is recorded now, which means you are a higher risk, which means premiums will go up.
he was a bit of an arse and was going on about waht sort of damage they would be "underneath" i'm thinking, its a modern car, if there is any damage then i'd go straight to them! I think he wanted a new rear bumper but he hasnt got back to me yet regarding a garage quote, in all honesty this would be my preferred option but surely the fact that he has already been in touchwith his insurance people would sugges the doesnt plan ot go down this route?

I rolled into the back of some woman at about 3mph a couple of years back.. I gave her my details and told her I'd get her car fixed for her (polish bumper, replace numberplate light lens.. job done, 50 quid). But no, she insisted on going to her insurer.
We talked to our insurer and asked if we could settle the claim privately in order to avoid affecting our no-claims. They responded in the affirmative. To this day they never kept a record of the accident.
Of course, because the woman in front went to her insurers, we got a bill from Direct Line for about a grand. I wrote back and told them to FCUK right off and sent them a cheque for the cost of the repairs, but not covering hire cars and uninsured losses (excess). Ended up paying about £120 quid or something..
I wrote that as we'd offered to sort the problem directly in the first instance, we would pay for the repair to her car but were not at all prepared to cover the cost of her extended hire car use and uninsured losses.
Never heard back.
