jackal posted this on the Elise BBS and I thought it was too good to let it slip into the archives without letting you lot see it.

He's managed to put into words something I've seen happen to a lot of people recently, and even though I'm still only on stage 3 to 4 I've been through the rest of the cycle in my head trying to work out what car(s) I want, and why. Depressing really!

Edit: By the way, GJOB = Garage Jewellery Owning Bastard.

whereabout are you on this homeric journey ?

1. My beautiful shiny car is the best, nothing else is as fast and if it is then mine handles better and has a better road image. Porsches are rubbish... not sure why but they just are but I've never driven one. In fact the only decent car I have ever drive is my own but it doesn't matter cos its the best.

2. Ive just crashed my car, i need to learn how to drive it. Im so upset that ive been weeping for days. The car represents an anxious attachment to my mother, or rather more specifically, to the breast... and since its been in teh garage for 4 weeks and i fell very lonely and depressed.

3. I now take my car on track after getting some instruction. I never dreamt that the car could go so fast when well-driven. My car is the quickest thing in the known universe and I have passed a Zonda, an SR3 and a F3 car on track. The handling is brilliant as well cos the car feels liek a racecar.

4. My car is disappointing me a little. I have been overtaken on track of late by a few hot hatches and i have spun a few times. Also, the cost is climbing higher and higher. When you use a car on track things start breaking but this used to be my pride and joy ... my dream posession and i am sytematically destroying it.

5. I seem to be more concerned with trackdays these days and the car is becoming more and more a means to an end. It makes sense to get something cheap and cheerful for the road and then something more track dedicated that I can trailer. A "nail" as they are called... that will be very fast as well.

6. My new nail is wicked. So very fast and at home on eth circuit. I really can beat most people now and all my old pals get lapped in just half a session. I am the best driver in eth world. I must be coz i am fast.

7. My nail blew up. My nail has developed a lot of problems. My nail went click. My nail represenst an awful amount of money to have tied up for somethiong that i only use once a month. The cost of trackdays is more than i imagined what with tyres and the *click*.

8. The nail is being sold. I am sick of the cost, the hassle and the rebuilds. Also, i have no garage jewelery to keep me happy and nothing for the neighbours to peer at across their drive and be jelous about. People dont seem to think i'm successful anymore.. they look at me in my oil stained sparcos and reckon i'm a pikey.

9. I now have a proper racecar that i bought very cheaply/hire a trackcar and also I purchased a gleaming new antinail to use on the road. I am not so interested in going fast these days, just having fun and developing more car control and skill. My beautiful shiny antinail is also the best, nothing else is as fast and if it is then mine handles better and has a better road image. Porsches are rubbish... not sure why but they just are but I've never driven one.

10. I sold all my cars and bought a new Dog, a cashmere sweater and a mini bar for the lounge. Life is more stable but perhaps more boring. Who cares ... we all have to die in any case.
