Whats wrong with TVR ??
Discussion
Guys , I'm soon to be in the market for a cerbera but I cant help feeling put off by the amount I read about poor reliability, I currently run a mk4 supra , (I can hear the groans already !) but to be fair to it I have done 50K plus miles in it with only a broken headlight bulb. Ok it its not a TVR but it has got a three litre twin turbo engine. Can anyone make me feel happier and more positive about looking for a TVR !!!
You obviously hanker after one
, a cerbie will not have the 50K strength of a jap mobile though. I've considered a cerbie as a 4th car myself but can't justify it with the bank manager (read better half
) at the moment
.
I'm sure there are more than enough cerb owners on here that will give you the low down, but the general feeling I get is that £2K a year is the sort of budget to expect, some years you'll be pleasantly suprised some years you'll be shocked
.
You know you want to do it
so go into it with your eyes wide open, speak to as many current owners as you can and get a sorted one. As the the saying goes you're a long time dead and thats a long time to regret not doing something
.

PS AJP8 is the way to go, not the 6

IMHOThis is my fifth year of TVR ownership now, and have had 2 new cars, Griff 500 and a Tamora.
I can honestly say that I have never been let down by either car, and they are just a joy to own and drive.
I to, like yourself did have reservations initially before taking the plunge, listening to all the scare stories out there, and all of the negative press comment that seems to go with this marque.
But, as said above, go and take a test drive, and you will be hooked, I guarantee it.

As far as I can see most of the negative stuff said about TVRs comes from people who have never actually owned one. Even in this thread the only negative comment comes from someone who has seen a cerbie being towed.
When I bought my Chimaera most people I told said "nice car, unreliable though" needless to say none of them have owned one.
I run it every day with no probs, look in the Cerbie forum and you will find plenty of people who do the same.
They do need looking after though, check fluids regulary and don't scrimp on servicing etc...
There, said my piece.

Well Mr DVD I had a Supra twin turbo too and I part exed it for a Chimaera. I had the chance to go for the Cerbera but decided to go for the Rover V8 for my first play with TVR's. I have heared some real nasty stories about the costs associated with the Cerbera.
I have to say that I have not ( so far - 6 months down the line )enjoyed a car as much as I do the Chimaera.
IMO the Supra is a bloody great car - but go buy your TVR - you know that you want to!!
Good hunting.
PS I do know of a rather cheap 4.2 Cerbera that may be on the market during the next couple of months. See previous thread.

Go for it.
The problem with TVR's is that the wrong people have bought them over the years (generally the type of person who buys a car as a cock extension or fancies blowing their bonus on one rather than sticking to SLKs and Porkers), as a result these people aren't as sympathetic as they need to be (face it TVR's aint got German build quality) hence not looking after the car and expecting to just stick petrol in.
Basically ask yourself, are you buying it because its quick and you want to impress ya mates. Or do you want a unique British sportscar which may or may not be 100%, plus a car you will apreciate (which is also blindingly fast and drop dead goregeous!!).
The crux is that there are always going to be Friday afternoon cars, just that TVR seem to make a few. I know loads of people with Cerbies and only the minority had problems.
Just go for it but have an open mind (open wallet helps!!). Certainly have a chat to the chaps on the Cerbera forum, most would be happy to take you out for a quick blat!!

Edited state that the city bonus / Porche thing is a generalisation. If it upsets people - tought shit, live with it.

Totally agree with Steve here. There ars some shit cars out there that have been ownwed by total non interested people(which excludes all PH people). Hence they dont get looked after. Buy a good one and it will be fine. No doubt you will have a few niggles, every car on the planet does but if you are aware of them and do something about it straight away then no problems for the future. I bought my Griff of a stock broker, total tosser, it needed loads of little things done to it like resticking carpets down, window adjustments and hazards not working etc.He was selling it as he wasnt happy about these, all my gain really as i knocked him down 2000 quid and spent a few weekends sorting them out. Basically look at lots including private and take your time. TVR's need looking after, so any problems with them investigate further. Good luck.
Ive been driving TVRs as my ony transport daily for just over two years now, 6mths Chimaera and 18mths Tuscan. Apart from a throttle cable that I knew was going to snap but couldn't be bothered to do anything they have not let me down. I have of course had the odd minor thing or two but nothing to stop me from using the car outside services.
I have owned TVR's for over 6 years....culminating in a cerbera 4.5
....they are fine if you drive then regularly and DO have minor niggles from time to time like little elctrical rubbish and potentiometers seem prone to going tits up - but these are all minor issues...yes when the car goes wrong (which I only ever had one mechanical failure - and that was caused by a faulty part) then yes they can be a little more expensive - but you don't buy a sportscar like this for its BMW like build quality and reliability
but
...you will never forget owning a cerbera.....its magical...
Get it drive it and get a warranty
.....and start grinning....

As a diehard Lotus owner have to admit from time to time to having been tempted to jump ship for a TVR, having been driven in mateys - straightline performance is quite literally staggering - but on the twisty bits they are to say the least demanding.. - surely TVR need to improve their efforts in the handling department.
