About two weeks ago, some erbert (a special breed of numpty) came belting round a corner on a country lane, forcing wife into ditch. Result: one bent alloy and a bill for £650. He didn't stop, and no other damage.

We had an idea that we could claim off the insurance, so called them. They said: dunno, depends on the incident, tell us all about it but we can't guarantee that (a) we'll pay for the wheel, (b) we'll pay for the tyre, and (c) whether we'll pay 100% at all! Oh, and by the way, it will probably affect next years premium. What's the point!! So, a couple of days later, we got a claim form, and chucked it in the bin.

Now, the renewal comes round and it transpires that not only has this 'incident' been recorded on our record, but we should also be telling all the other insurance companies about it! What a load of bcks!! The guy said: if someone keeps getting their stereo nicked and doesn't tell us, and we find out when they decide to claim, they might refuse the claim! WHAT!!!??? WHAT'S THE POINT OF INSURANCE, THEN??

What are these guys on? First they protect themseves from claimants by threatening not to pay out all of the repair costs and pointing out that next years premium will rise, then they increase the flippin' premium anyway even if you don't claim!

Anyway, Privilege have come up trumps, undercutting them by over £500. I've always said you should vote with your feet, but somehow this doesn't feel like i'm getting my own back. Anyone got any ideas?

Buy a really cheap car.
Insure with these people TPF&T.

Find a the most expensive car you can.
Hit it with insured cheap car.

Wave goodbye to no claims, but probably worth it...

Nice one! You've got a point about the no claims, though - the other thing I forgot to mention is that we've been with these guys for the last 3 or 4 years and the wife's got 10 years - yes T E N years NCB. And they still screw us!

Rant .. rant .. rant

I don't know who your insured with, but as far as I am aware if you didn't claim you need not tell anyone!

Afterall insurance companies ask: "have you had any claims or convictions in the last 3/5 years". You havent claimed! End of story!

I have to say, this does sound like scurrilous practice.

We've discussed an incident we didn't claim for withour insurers and it didn't affect the premium one jot. It seems we were lucky though, as I've heard of a few insurers humming the same tune you just described.

Legalised extortion. All kinds of insurance.

If you are unhappy with your insurance company,
why not claim to the insurance ombudsman ?

Plenty of form filling in for you & your insurance company.

I always vote with my feet. It is your moral duty to do so.

If you can save 500 quid on an insurance, it sounds like
you had a big bill to start with.

Ombudsman? I guess so. But I wonder how many hoops i'll have to jump through before I find out that actually i've got nothing to complain about because they haven't actually done anything wrong?

The reason for the anomoly with quotes is probably cos we changed car mid-term, to something a little more (ahem) powerful.

And that's another thing! When you call 'em up to get a quote for your new car, they refuse to do it. The only thing they would do is tell you what you have to pay to cover you until the end of your period. Just their way of disguising the fact that they are fleecing you. Bah!

I thought most asked "any accidents, claims or convictions".

This is standard practice I am afraid.
