Pi55ing people off
Discussion
Part of my daily drive to work includes driving through three villages - all with 30 mph speed limits. I always make a conscious effort to stick within this limit and by doing so have avoided running over several animals (ducks, cats, etc).
However to avoid the boredom, I like to count the number of cars that I quickly collect behind me. The problem is that I now derive sick pleasure in this activity as I am clearly pi55ing off these people by travelling at 30 mph.
Help - am I becoming an annoying Numptie?

Not if you floor it as soon as you reach an NSL road like I do.
I don't regard people who stick to speed limits in urban areas as numpties, I do exactly the same as you and also take pleasure in slowing them down. Then I make sure that the idiot on my bumper in the 30 zone receeds to a small dot very very quickly as soon as I reach the black and white "No Speed Limit"
sign.

Yep - do that alright - there is a bit of NSL later on and I always like to try and see what speed I can get up to before having to hit the brakes for the 90 degree bend at the end.

Glad it is not just me - thanks Bonce

...oh thank god(?) I'm not alone. I doubt the to$$er on bumper to small dot transition is as abrupt in my mirror, but the process is much the same.
There's no excuse for tare-arsing through the villages, especially before and after work, as these are prime times for kids to on the way to school or playing around outside generally.
Stick it 2nd or 3rd and cruise between the houses @ 30 or 40 as limits permit and enjoy the voice of the car blatting off the walls while the wind noise is minimal.
It always fun too, to see how bus-stop waiters heads are turned, especially little sixth form school minxes...ooops did I say that?
ho hum, look but but don't touch, they're probably in Dr. Mouse's classes too, 'ey Scruff.
Mouse.

yep, happens to me all the time on the bike. I can get past anything, anytime I want. Then after 2 miles of 40mph, there they are... right behind me. Them not slowing down at all from their stately 45..
One guy actually overtook me 1/4 mile from the NSL.
What a challenge that was. But I kept going at 40ish, then gave it the big 'un. 130 fly past, full revs.

I'm not entirely sure that's logical. Exceed the speed limit by 65mph at times, and by zero at other times

. If you're prepared to break the spped limit by that amount just out of NSL, why stick to it all the way inside? Surely a more consistent approach would be more logical. I must admit to pissing people off by sticking to 30 limits , i was following some old codgers once got past them before melplash and slowed to the 30 limit old git comes up behind sits right up my arse flashing his lights then tries to overtake in the end he makes it as i get near the NSL he is in a layby having a chat with two coppers who are doing a speed trap gave him a toot and a wave as i went past

I was overtaken on saturday when I left Brands Hatch.
Its a 40mph zone, through West Kingsdown. Well known for speed traps. So I was doing 40mph. A Merc C class comes right up behind me, and (eventually) decides to overtake me. He takes ages!!!!!
He then breakes/brakes/beakers hard, indicated left, and turns off the road.
What the f***?
WHY?
What did that prove???
I wanted to follow him, and ask him why he bothered?
And, as he obviously lives close by, would'nt he be pleased to see a car obeying the speed limit through his home town???
I don't geddit. Can someone please explain...

Appropriate speed n all that - perfectly logical approach.
I'm about to go home via a 20MPH limit with those speed bumps that aren't quite as wide as a car. I love collecting numpties close behind me 'cos they can't see the bumps in time to avoid them.
I can't help thinking that this would be an excellent place for a camera (village with a school and pavement on only one side of the road).
I'm sure I'd be safer watching the road than the numpties in the mirror - maybe DM's obsesive observation of pedestrians is the safer technique...

Fer said: Good for you, Big_M. I agree 100%, if there is a posted speed limit (20, 30, 40) then I will stick to it, regardless of the FW's that I collect on my bumper. Once we get onto open road, then that is where I will use appropriate speed.
I would argue its best to adopt an appropriate speed everywhere. Very often that is BELOW the 30mph "limit" - sometimes its above but generally I do stick to the lower limits. Out on that open road I adopt an appropriate
speed. And I do love the way the car behind turns into a small dot in the rear view.
Agree about the numpty 45ers - 45 in an NSL, 45 in a 30...to55ers.

The worst offenders for speeding in residential area's are Taxi's IMHO.
I've never had so much plesure out of a 30 limit, than when I have a Taxi tailgaiting me.
But then, when you've been out on the beers, get into a taxi and head for home, your almost willing him to go faster as you watch the price on the display rising.

I usually do 30 in a 30 limit, and even slower past schools/parked cars/poor visibility areas. I often have people sawing away about 2ft from the rear of the car. I thus slow down to a speed at which I think they could stop (usually about 15mph). I then give the throttle a blip to get some space and stick at 30 - repeat as necessary. Does this make me a numpty ?
Whan I get to the NSL, I give the car full wellie and drive to the conditions - rarely over 50 if icing conditions, rev limiter in good conditions (in 2nd honest ociffer)
I even had a police car about 4' from the rear of the Chimaera over the weekend. No lights flashing, so I slowed for a bit then blast to speed limit. Its not only the other numties you have to look out for !

I have three points from a couple of years ago and recently driving through Sitingbourn (?) a car went through a speed trap the other way and the camera double flashed. I thought it was me but it was a forward facing camera.
It was enough for me, licence preservations sets in and I have started to obey (YOU WILL OBEY) speed limits. Past a school today I observed the 30mph speed limit, perhaps a bit below (I know there on half term but you cant be too careful) And still there were three cars glued to my bumper.
