Viper Induction Kit?

A friend of mine has recently bought his first "performance" car, a 205 1.9 GTi.
Not a patch on the average machinery around here, but still better than a numptymobile and great fun
He hasnt quite managed to escape the max-power posse however, and is trying to convince me that when he fits a "viper" induction kit (with special "ram air" effects...) he will get about 18 BHP from it...
First reaction to this is that its a load of rubbish (18 BHP on a 10 year old, 130 BHP car? from a filter?) and that the claimed "ram air effect" is useless when mounted in a 205 engine bay.
Has anyone heard of these? Is there something im missing here or is my initial reaction correct?
Hope someone can clear up this arguement for us!

It's just a conical air filter with piping directed from the front bumper (or similar) to act as cold air ducting. I'm sure it'll work better than the crappy standard Pug part, but probably no better than drilling holes in the airbox and feeding in air through some 3in pipework.
As for all that bhp gained – hmm, slightly optimistic. Maybe 'horsepower' should be changed to 'bullpower'?
Edit: And as far as I can remember from my old 205 1.9, you will be struggling to get much cold air up to the filter. He'd be better off fitting a Lax Flower Isuzu Trooper bonnet scoop...

Er, the 205 gti engine is very efficient in it's standard state - Peugeot did an excellent job with the engine (137bhp from a 1.9 engine back in the 80's) and they worked particularly hard on the intake and exhaust systems.
speaking from experience (I own one and have looked into air filters and aftermarket exhausts extensively). The one thing I found is that you simply can't get better than fitting a proper standard Peugeot exhaust and the filter system it comes with.
Save your money that you were oging to spend on the filter and uprate the bushes (to silicone ones) in the suspension - you'll improve the handling (and thus performance) no end.
