When it comes to cars, everyone wants a bargain. And with cars getting more reliable, more durable and more rot-free than ever they have been, paying pocket money for an older machine need not be a total restoration job.

In other words, old cars have never been such a good buy. So in the spirit of aiming for fun, low-cost motoring, here's our regular weekly slot.

We've trawled the depths of Auto Trader to find a bargain for £500. And here's this week's ad, courtesy of PHer J500ANT (and if you find a bargain worth of inclusion next week, let us know):

1988 E Reg BMW 750i L, 4 Doors, Automatic, Saloon, Petrol, Metallic Blue. Sounds alright. Don't quite get the 'AMG' thing though. Still, letting the kids blast around in a 60mph toy car is one way to get rid of them...

Ok its been a quiet morning so I have found a couple more, not familiar with some of these cars so forgive me if I've put in a dog (though it is SHED of the week )


Ford Scorpio 2.9i Cosworth
Not sure if they are any good, £250

Merc 190E 2.3 16v Cosworth
Think this one has been done before, £500

BMW E34 525i
Only a 525i, but looks good and better than the more usual 520i's in the price range, £500

Saab 900 Aero Turbo
Reverse gear fault, aero bodykit (not sure if that means its not a genuine aero though , £500

Alfa Romeo 164 3.0 V6
95 model, red doesn't say much else! probably an auto though , £500

BMW E30 325i Touring
less obvious than the usual 325i's, BBS alloys as well, £500

Vauxhaull Omega 3.0 V6
Ex cop car £395

Ford Scorpio 2.9 24v
Not entirely sure whether its a goer or not from the strange ad, ugly as sin but they might be ok to drive £495

bloody hell, just did a quote for the 750i and Directline want £758 3rdPFT and that's with max noclaims!!!!
Over a 1K for fully comp. sod that; no wonder its for sale for so cheap.

Nice mobile office/Stately home. Mine may be newer but I love it. At the moment I am getting around town 20.3MPG. The scarey thing is hitting 120 seems like 70! They may be a pile of money to run but the comfort, toys, and power. Mmmmmmmm . Shame about the group 20 insurance bit.

Some dodgy "geezer" will buy it and run it without insurance...

So anyway, I've been keeping an eye on this shed of the week thing, and they all seem to be BMWs. Strange...

Out of curiosity, I checked insurance, and its around 360 dollars for 6 months (~180 pounds?). With that rate, I can see a lot of people being suckered into it as "good value" not realizing the running costs of that V12 if it hasn't been taken care of (for $3000 I doubt it has).
