Many years ago I worked in flooring and I managed to wangle the VW Transporter TD van. Ok, this was the old one with the rear engine and about 80BHP, but dog leg first and an all-or-nothing turbo boost meant for fun times....
Ok, so it wasnt that fast, but boy felt much much faster than it actually was. So I would suggest that the VW transporter with the big TD engine would be a stomper!
Mind you, on the same fleet we did have a n/a diesel Vauxhall Midi van (Isuzu basically) which managed to hit 115MPH once and only once! Not bad for something that struggled to put out 60BHP!

is that the same 2.5 ...V6 lump that sits in audisA4,s A6 Passats etc....if not whts its make up....
Its actually a 5 Cylinder. Its transverse, water cooled in-line variable turbine geometry turbocharger with intercooler. 174 BHP @ 3,500 rpm.
Believe me, I've driven every van out there and this is the quickest by far.
The downside, its front wheel drive.
Good job to be honest. With no load in it, its like driving the Griff!

Not really. Although the 2.4D engine was ace. If I remember rightly it was 78bhp and had a bag of torque. This was phased out and they introduced two new 2.5TDI engines that were derived from the 2.4. These now created 88 and 102bhp.
These were then phased out and the now completely new PD engines were introduced.
They are 1.9TDi 85BHP and 104BHP AND
2.5TDi 130BHP and 174BHP.
We have had 105mph out of a long wheel base transit, the 6gear version will hold 105 rather then just hit it from time to time and topped out at 110.
The short wheelbase front wheel drive transit, lacked power but down a big hill we saw an indicated 115mph.
It had no revs left at all.

When I was an agency van driver I had a choice each morning of the following
i) Many LDV pilot vans
ii) Many transits
iii)A couple of Merc Sprinters
The preference was always the sprinter then pilot then transit. The Sprinter was so much faster than the others it was untrue. The pilot had post office style sliding drivers doors so were good for hot days. The transits were just crap

I occasionally rent a VW LT 35 (not sure which engine, the top diesel as far as I know). Damn thing flies...fully loaded (and I mean to the gunnals[sp?] will do 100mph for mile upon mile.
First time I drove it I was shocked to find it had traction control (its a diesel van FFS I kept telling myself) which was defo needed with the van empty...yeehaa
A right hoot!

They do 2.5TDI's with 83BHP, 95BHP and 109BHP versions.
They also do a 4-pot 2.8TDi 158BHP.
The 109 and 158bhp are flyers.
Incidentally, to all the SPRINTER lovers, the LT is exactly the same body but with more BHP. It is quicker and more economical than the Sprinter.

Indeed, this baby is rear wheel drive, you see.
Fun.
Especially in pre-bodied chassis cab form.

Mind you, your chances of living if it all goes tits up at motorway speeds are about as slim as the average 4x4 drivers. Dont think I would fancy having to brake or take avoiding action if an 'event' happened just ahead of me on a dual carriageway or motorway.
My God, i've come over all pious
