Grand Prix Legends PC Game
Discussion
This PC game has been mentioned a few times today in the debate about F1 rulechanges and obviously has a few fans here!
Basically, I can see what makes it such a great game in theory (all the cool old full-length 60's tracks, yes, including the full on Nurburgring, all the cool old 60's cars and drivers) but I never liked it.
I was shit, the sound would completely cock up anytime I did a wheelspin (making it impossible to hear whether or not you had lost traction) and my PC steering wheel kept breaking.
I spent hours practising and never really got anywhere!
Can anyone tell me which steering wheel I should buy to try again, how to resolve the sound issue (I spent three months trying to get it sorted with the game company but never got anywhere), and how to strike the balance between spinning off on every corner or taking 48 minutes to do a lap of the Nordschliefe in first and second gear?
I want to enjoy it but it's too much like hard work

If you go here: www.racesimcentral.com and ask in the forums you will get loads of help. I think the best FF wheel at the moment is the Logitech MOMO. I've never had issues with sound before, but i've heard that Win XP uses had some problems though I seem to remember this was largely solved with a driver update.
Just try to drive slower and you will get faster (if that makes sense)

I am big fan of racinh simulator. you should try live for speed from www.liveforspeed.net

Anyone here played Battlefield 1942? Apart from being able to drive tanks and various aircraft it also gives you the oppotunity to drive jeeps. Now having great fun running over my fellow soldiers (if you hit them their body clings to the front of the car - very funny) and trying to make the jeep leap off cliffs!!
I think someone even came up with a jeep racing league, seemed hysterical.

I could never get the hang of the game-
My processor is fast enough, he screens ran Ok, but EVERY corner I cmae to it would just understeer off. Or, if I threw it into a bend (a bit) I would spin off.
I could never get the hang of it, so I retired to my Le Mans and Touring car games- now those I can race...

What sort of controller have you got / would you reccomend, I'd quite like to get into this but haven't got a clue where to start really

If you look at www.racesimcentral.com you will find some good beginners guides for GPL. You don't need a high spec PC to run it - runs fine on my P3-450/GF2 GTS, but you will want a decent FF wheel and pedals.
GPL is published by Sierra and usually costs about a fiver. Amazon don't seem to stock it any more but hmv or virgin might if you check their websites.
I'm not that keen on steering wheels and joysticks so have a Gravis Xterminator digital gamepad. Unfortunately it has been causing me quite a few problems under windows 2000 and seems to go out of calibration or just crashes requiring a reboot. This happened more and more frequently that I stopped playing. It is quite an old one (plugs into the sound card and not usb) and I've downloaded all the latest drivers but to no avail. The reason I like it over other gamepads is that the shoulder buttons are analogue padle type things which you can assigned to the accelerator and brake allowing you to apply an accelerator and/or brake from 0% to 100% which I think is essential.
I also have a logitech wingman rumble pad which is reliable but I can't get on with digital accelerator/brake controls and my brain can't cope with using the left joystick as a front/back-accelerator/brake while I steer left and right with the left joystick iyswim.

Which one? I haven't had a problem with gpl or half-life/counterstrike yet.
I would like to play GPL but I refuse to play any game made by Sierra after spending hours cleaning up my PC after the last Sierra game I installed.

Got it for 3.99 in HMV. Its great but its a bit tricky. Also it seems to be running far too fast. The 15 min practice takes 7 and a half mins??? Also using the number pad to control it is an arse. Why can't I redefine the keys so its actually playable????

Is it on a budget label?
