Hey all

I read here often but post little.

Anyway, I'm 20 and have been competing in the 'Autocar young driver of the year' competition. I am one of the final 32 through to the final. This Saturday I go to a 'special test facility' in Warwick (anyone know what this is and what tests they may have?) to compete with others.

We haven't been told what we have to do, so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas wether we'll be driving a track, or through cones, or just reversing into parking bays?

It's run in association with Seat, so if I win I get an Ibiza 1.4 Sport.. joy.. think I'll keep the Merc 190E :-p

later!

I've no idea what you might have to do, so I'm little use to you there - thought I'd wish you good luck though!

Autocar or Autosport?

Anyway... do you need a PistonHeads sticker for your car?

just spoke to a friend who did it in 1997 and the final rounds consisted of;
4wd off road driving,
a skid pan car run,
a high speed test on a sprint course with chicanes etc,
a skills test involving tennis ball on a bplate on the bonnet of a car which you had to drive around a course and not let the ball fall off!
general road driving to test awareness etc in all there were eight disciplines.
best of luck, his advice was slow and steady....

theres enough bristolian ph'ers to have a good meet soon!

Sounds good are there any age limits might have a go after I pass my test, off road driving, PAH!! I learnt to drive properly in my land rover, bring on Salisbury Plain Driver Training area anyday!

As for the sprint course, should be starting racing next March/April (fingers crossed).

Where can I find information!!!!

Thanks for your help guys..

I go there tomorrow.. arrive 9 am! They sent an info pack containing little but the info that it is at Prodrive (thanks Mark B)

Pablo - thanks very much for that, it's very helpful and will give me some idea what I'm doing. I'm hoping being slow & steady will bring the title on home, I'll have to practice as much as I can tonight tho..

As soon as I'm back at my computer I'll let you all know what we did and how I got on - and I'm looking forward to a Bristolian PH meet, after which I'll crown my car with a sticker

later!

Well, I'm back.

It was a good fun day, driving around in lots of Ibiza's. We had to do, in no order:

Ball-on-the-Bonnet driving round small twisty track
Braking without ABS with one side on grippy & one side on slippery surface.
Braking with ABS while turning through cones
Written general motoring questions quiz.
A timed autotest (drive around cones, reverse into bays etc.).
Circuit driving (we had to be as smooth as poss.)

Then 4 of us got through to the final, and we had to do a much harder, longer autotest followed by a fingers-on-the-buzzer quiz by the Autocar magazine staff.

Oh and the best bit of the day was, I won!
And will soon be the proud owner of a Seat Ibiza 1.4 Sport.. hmm, still wondering what to do with it.. (I'll save you the trouble, list price is a little over £11,000 )

hehe.. tempting but, no!

So far I've only spent £200 on one of those Nokia phones with a camera in.

For the rest, I was thinking 91 - 93 Mercedes 500E? Thats the left hand drive only model engineered & almost entirely built by Porsche. Anyone any other ideas? Needs to be a daily(ish) driver!

Why not get a Porsche 944? I got my S2 for £6500. A great handling and quick sportscar that is very practical, relatively inexpensive to maintain and a reliable daily driver. You can spend whats left over on the insurance premiums for the next few years
